Remington, the country's oldest firearms manufacturer, has announced that it will close its huge firearms factory in Ilion, New York, and relocate to Georgia, leaving whole families without employment. Eliphalet Remington created his first rifle barrel in the village of Ilion in 1816, and his company grew to a 1 million square foot factory with thousands of employees over the next two decades. The plant has long been the town's most prominent employer, with a population of just 7,600 people. Mayor John Stephens has been worried about the future of Ilion.
