Israel "Eli" Guttman (born 24 February 1958) is a retired Israeli football player and coach who most recently served Maccabi Haifa before officially announcing his retirement from football, citing health issues as the primary reason.
Career
Guttman was born in Israel to a family of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. As a youth in the youth ranks of Hapoel Haifa, he began playing football, but he never managed to play for the senior team. He joined Beitar Netanya in Liga Alef and later played for Maccabi Neve Sha'ananan and Maccabi Kiryat Bialik.
He retired from playing and into administration in Israeli football after six years of playing in lower divisions, and the following season began as a boss. Maccabi Bialik, his first club as a manager, was the club where he last played - Maccabi Kiryat Bialik. He took over Beitar Haifa in Liga Alef for the upcoming season. He served as the manager of Hapoel Tirat HaCarmel in 1989-1990, and Tamra was relegated at the end of the season.
Guttman, a 1990, served as the assistant manager of Maccabi Haifa. Guttman appeared under Shlomo Scharf for two seasons, winning both the Israeli championship and the state cup in 1988-1991. He worked with AEL Limassol from February 2007 to early December 2007, before returning to Hapoel Tel Aviv as the successor to Guy Luzon. He aided the team in escaping relegation and started building the team until winning the Israeli double – the Israeli Premier League championship and the Israel State Cup – in 2010. He coached the team in its first-ever qualifier to the UEFA Champions League group stage the following season. He left Hapoel Tel Aviv in May 2011, after winning the 2011 Israeli State Cup.
He was appointed manager of Israel's national football team on December 27, 2011. Guttman resigned as the national team's manager on October 14, 2015, after the Euro 2016 qualifying effort was largely unsuccessful, he departed on October 14, 2015.
