Egan Arley Bernal Gómez (born 13 January 1997) is a Colombian cyclist who competes for UCI WorldTeam Ineos.

He won the 2019 Tour de France, becoming the first Latin American winner of the competition.

Early life

Bernal was born in Bogotá, Colombia, and raised in Zipaquirá. He is the oldest child of Germán, an employee of the Salt Cathedral, and Flor, a flower factory worker. His father, a keen amateur cyclist, started riding his bike at age five, and he began riding on a secondhand bicycle. He entered and successfully win a race in his home town, against his father's wishes. The reward for which included a training scholarship was worthless at nine years old. He spent a semester at Universidad de la Sabana in Chia, Colombia.

He began to concentrate on and excelled at mountain biking, winning championships in Brazil, Costa Rica, and the United States, as well as winning gold (2014) and bronze (2015) in the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships junior cross country championships.
