Edwin Drake Life

Edwin Laurentine Drake (March 29, 1819 – November 9, 1880), also known as Colonel Drake, was an American businessman and the first American to successfully drill for oil.

Early life

Edwin Drake, the son of Lyman and Laura Drake, was born in Greenville, New York, on March 29, 1819. He grew up on family farms around New York state and Castleton, Vermont, before leaving home at the age of 19. He spent the early years of his life as a clerk, express agent, and a conductor. He married Philena Adams in 1845, who died whilst giving birth to their second child in 1854. In 1857, Drake remarried three years later to Laura Dowd, his sixteenth year of age. Drake was unable to continue working this summer due to his illness. He retained the privileges of a train conductor, which included free travel on railroads. The Drake family was living in Titusville, Pennsylvania, by 1858.
