Edward Mulhare (8 April 1923 – May 1997), an Irish comedian whose career spanned five decades, was an Irish actor.
He is best known for his appearances in two television series, The Ghost & Mrs. Muir and Knight Rider.
Early life and career
Mulhare, one of three brothers, was born on Quaker Road, Cork, Ireland, to John and Catherine (née Keane Mulhare). He received his education at St. Nessan's Christian Brothers School and then North Monastery as a youth. Mulhare, as a young adult, began training at the National University of Ireland in medicine, but eventually settled on a career in theatre. After appearing in various Irish venues, including the Gate Theatre in Dublin, he moved to London, where he performed with Orson Welles and John Gield. He co-starred with Orson Welles in a 1951 revival of "Othello" directed by Laurence Olivier and appeared in Pygmalion before heading to America.
In 1955 Mulhare appeared as James Finnegan in Israel's first feature film – Hill 24 Doesn't Answer.
Professor Higgins appeared in the original Broadway revival of My Fair Lady as Professor Higgins, having taken over Rex Harrison's role in 1957. Mulhare was understudy to Harrison until that time, and went on to perform the role in New York for three years and then continued on the tour of Russia, which included a lengthy tour of Russia. He continued to perform in summer theatres and touring companies into the 1970s. My Fair Lady's memorable appearance on the university campus of East Lansing MI was originally cancelled due to blizzard, but the performance was sold out to a packed house of 4000, with a warning that if anyone could attend free. Many people appeared on skis, as Mulhare and Anne Rogers told The Irv Kupcinet Show in a 1978 interview. Mulhare and Rogers continued to act in Camelot, playing King Arthur and Guenevere.
