In a horrific shooting at an Indian restaurant, Lord Patten's son-in-law was sentenced to five years in prison for being a getaway driver. Elton Charles, 51, who is married to the Conservative Party chief and former Hong Kong governor Laura, was recruited by his half-brother Nathaniel St Aimie as part of a conspiracy to terrorize bosses at the PBK restaurant in Greenford, west London. On September 6, 2004, Charles participated in the mafia-style plot with co-conspirators Nicholas Grant, 46, and Lee Morgan, 42, both of whom were previously sentenced to five years in Kingston Crown Court.

The guilty verdicts were returned to Kingston Crown Court this afternoon, Laura Patten clutched her head in her hands and wept. Her husband, who had claimed that he was only out of the house to illegally collect marijuana because "my wife doesn't like me smoking," was found guilty of his involvement in a plot devised by his half-brother Nathaniel St Aimie. Charles was the getaway driver in a shooting that culminated in glass spraying into the dining area, where horrified families were eating. Four men from the east London curry house wanted to terrorize the chiefs. On the evening of September 6 last year, a hooded man wielding a sawn-off rifle was caught on CCTV getting out of a white van before firing a single cartridge into the glass. When the gun blast shattered the window, it was only by sheer 'good fortune' that none of the diners were hurt. As the gunman opened fire, diners fled for cover and shielded children in the restaurant.
