My toe-curlingly embarrassing faux pas with an aubergine emoji... and other tales from 25 years of the emoji

Believe it or not, emojis are now 25 years old. And over that time, we've come to accept them as a type of everyday language. Everything from the humble smiley to the laughing-with-crying face helps us to communicate more effectively over text. You could say, emojis are the body language of the digital age. But new research, published earlier this year by scientists at the University of Ottawa, showed that while many older folk recognised the icons, they were unclear on the appropriate context for their use. They also found that emojis are used in very different ways by those of different ages.

About to start on a joyless January diet? Read this and you may think twice... I was hoping that returning to my figure from ten years ago would make me happier. I was wrong

I lay on the floor of a hotel bathroom in central London in late spring last year, while paramedics packed round me. After dining out with my husband, I had collapsed moments before. I was fine for one minute, but the next doubled over in pain and heart racing ensued. Everything went blank in the morning. My husband claims I was unconscious for almost 15 minutes. As I came to, I remember hearing his voice, small and seemingly far away: 'Is she going to be OK? Is she going to be fine?' Something was beeping; a heart monitor. I couldn't see anything, but a soft, unfamiliar voice came next, 'Farrah'. . . Farrah is a fictional character. . . can you hear me?' So here's what happens when you die. I was exposed to CAT scans, MRIs, and several other labs that night and months afterward. I'd had a seizure before, but no one knew how or why. Despite shaming it over the years of extreme dieting and fitness, nothing remarkable had happened to my body up to this point. But, at the age of 44, it was pushing back, and I felt immense shame for the first time in my life.

People have attempted to purchase expensive works and valuable artefacts from museums throughout history. The Mona Lisa was stolen by a man who simply lifted it off the wall, in comparison to the robbery of an Edvard Munch leaving a note that read: 'Thanks for the poor security.' A worker who was a "world expert" was fired by the British Museum after items were "missing, stolen, or damaged," according to the British Museum. Peter John Higgins, 56, had worked at the museum for 30 years before being accused of stealing. Vincenzo Peruggia stepped up to the painting, took it off the wall, removed it from its case, and carried the Mona Lisa home, going back to 1911.

Edvard Munch's painting in the barn was hidden from Nazis. Scream Scream was auctioned for nearly £17 million

A huge painting by Edvard Munch (inset) that was hidden from the Nazis in a barn with a version of The Scream has sold at a London auction for over £17 million. The 13ft long work, titled 'Dance on the Beach,' (main image), belonged to Norwegian shipowner Thomas Olsen, who hung it in the first class lounge of a passenger liner that sailed between Oslo and Newcastle. Olsen, who lost his homeland in 1940, cut it down and smashed it in a barn deep in a Norwegian forest to discourage the Nazis from finding it.

In the skies over Scotland, rare'mother of pearl' clouds appear

Tiny ice particles are responsible for the mother of pearl clouds, also known as nacreous clouds. These tiny particles dispersed light in a different way, which is what gives the distinct 'pearly' appearance. Such hues are reminiscent of those that appear from a thin layer of oil on top of water - an effect called iridescence. Photographers from Aberdeenshire, the Highlands, and Moray have captured the stunning formations this week.
