My toe-curlingly embarrassing faux pas with an aubergine emoji... and other tales from 25 years of the emoji
www.dailymail.co.uk,
August 14, 2024
Believe it or not, emojis are now 25 years old. And over that time, we've come to accept them as a type of everyday language. Everything from the humble smiley to the laughing-with-crying face helps us to communicate more effectively over text. You could say, emojis are the body language of the digital age. But new research, published earlier this year by scientists at the University of Ottawa, showed that while many older folk recognised the icons, they were unclear on the appropriate context for their use. They also found that emojis are used in very different ways by those of different ages.
Tatler's 'dreadful' Kate Middleton cover is 'best forgotten', royal expert says - after bewildered fans said its artist 'should've gone to Specsavers'

The Tatler portrait of the Princess of Wales , (left) which was slammed by royal fans for looking nothing like Kate , is 'best forgotten', says royal expert. Royal commentator Michale Cole (right) described the portrait as 'dreadful' and likened it to the famous painting The Scream, by Edvard Munch, on GBNews today. Discussing the portrait of Kate, which appeared on the latest edition of Tatler, Mr Cole questioned why the magazine decided to put it on the front cover.
About to start on a joyless January diet? Read this and you may think twice... I was hoping that returning to my figure from ten years ago would make me happier. I was wrong

I lay on the floor of a hotel bathroom in central London in late spring last year, while paramedics packed round me. After dining out with my husband, I had collapsed moments before. I was fine for one minute, but the next doubled over in pain and heart racing ensued. Everything went blank in the morning. My husband claims I was unconscious for almost 15 minutes. As I came to, I remember hearing his voice, small and seemingly far away: 'Is she going to be OK? Is she going to be fine?' Something was beeping; a heart monitor. I couldn't see anything, but a soft, unfamiliar voice came next, 'Farrah'. . . Farrah is a fictional character. . . can you hear me?' So here's what happens when you die. I was exposed to CAT scans, MRIs, and several other labs that night and months afterward. I'd had a seizure before, but no one knew how or why. Despite shaming it over the years of extreme dieting and fitness, nothing remarkable had happened to my body up to this point. But, at the age of 44, it was pushing back, and I felt immense shame for the first time in my life.
