Eduard Khil Life

Khil became well-known to international audiences in 2010, after a 1976 clip of him performing a non-vocable vocable version of "I Am Very Glad" (Russian: tr. Ya ochen rad, ved ya, nakonets, vozvrashchajus domoy) became an internet meme, often referred to as "Trolol" or "Koolo" as an onomatopoeia of the song or as the "Russian Rickroll," and, as such, the song was commonly associated with Internet trolling. Mr. Trolo was chosen as a stage name in the song's resurgent popularity in Internet culture.

Early life and education

Eduard Anatolyevich Khil was born in Smolensk on September 4, 1934, to Anatoly Vasilyevich Khil and Yelena Pavlovna Kalugina. He was raised by his mother as a result of his family's separation. His kindergarten was bombed and separated from his mother, who was forced to Bekovo, Penza Oblast, where he ended up in a children's home that was lacking basic services and needs, including food. Despite the tragic circumstances, Eduard continued to perform in front of wounded soldiers in the nearby hospital. In 1943, he and his mother were reunited and escaped from Nazi Germany and moved to Leningrad, where he enrolled in and then graduated from printing college. Khil attended Leningrad Conservatory in 1955, where he studied under Yevgeny Olkhovsky and Zoya Lodyi's direction. He graduated in 1960. He began appearing in various lead operatic roles during his studies, including Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro.

Personal life

Khil is thought to have arisen from a Spanish ancestor with the surname Gil, which is pronounced similarly to hill.

When performing alongside her at the Leningrad Conservatory in July 1958, Khil met ballerina Pravdina. They toured together and began a dating relationship in the summer and fall. They were married on December 1, 1958, and they stayed married until his death in 2012.

They had one son, Dmitri, who was born in 1963, and a grandson named Eduard (born in 1997) after his grandfather.
