OSCAR CAINER: Although the Celestial Archer Super Lunar Eclipse dominates the celestial news, it's not the only story. Quick-thinking Mercury's move opposite Saturn (the Cosmic Teacher) tomorrow suggests a battle for control of the narrative. But this friendly mental sparring can help test the resilience of ideas. And The Archer's link with Neptune ensures our dreams won't disappear as quickly the Eclipse fades.
At 19, I pursued my university professor. This is why I'm proud of the relationship I had with him

It's probably a good idea that the University of Cambridge has banned personal relationships between staff and students. A new set of rules came into force this month which forbids any hanky panky between them, or anything that looks or sounds like hanky panky ('My my, professor, is that a large ruler in your pocket or are you simply pleased...' etc etc, said no student ever). This, most people would agree, is sensible. A clear, judicious set of guidelines to protect students and staff from a situation where anyone could be accused of abusing their power.

Why are swimming shorts called 'trunks'?
www.dailymail.co.uk,
January 17, 2024
Long, loose woollen undergarments were present in men's swimwear by the 19th century's end. These covered the entire body or 'trunk,' hence the term. The word 'trunk' comes from Old French, which refers to the main stem of a tree. The human body is directly referred to in this sense. Men of the 16th and early 17th century wore trunk hose, complete breeches, and occasionally padded over tights. The term was borrowed from men's swimming clothes and similar clothing for boxing. Even as men's swimming trunks became increasingly smaller throughout the twentieth century, the term was retained.

WHAT BOOK would celebrity chef and presenter Dave Myers take to a desert island?

I've been reading a lot lately, though cancer treatment is on the horizon. I'm currently reading True Colours by Stephen Leather, the tenth in his Spider Shepherd series of books. He's a SAS man turned policeman who is now in MI5. They're a fantastic collection of books that I can lose myself in. There are nine more, and it gives me the confidence that there is a lot more to come. This is a great escapism and a well-written book. I love seeing a series like this - it's a bit like binge-watching a series on television.
BRIAN VINER: Ten films you'd never realise are Christmas classics and they're all available to watch
www.dailymail.co.uk,
December 23, 2022
BRIAN VINER: Christmas films come in a variety of forms. It's A Wonderful Life (C4, Christmas Eve) and White Christmas are two of the cherished classics with a distinct festive theme, as shown below. There are others we associate with the season jolly because they're a yuletide fixture: The Great Escape (C4, Christmas Day) and The Magnificent Seven (BBC2, Boxing Day). But there is another category: top-notch films that are not commonly thought of as holiday fare, but in which Christmas looms large. Here's my Top Ten, with each of them a holiday treat and one way or another, all available to watch over the next few days. Merry Christmas!
On Netflix's "Wednesday," Jenna Ortega's Costumes have a deeper meaning
www.popsugar.co.uk,
December 7, 2022
I am a lifetime supporter of the Addams family and daughter, especially on Wednesday. In fact, the bulk of my wardrobe is influenced by the black-clad, macabre, braided-pigtail character. And though there have been many actors to play in Wednesday's shoes over the decades, Christina Ricci's 1991 appearance is certainly the most popular to this current generation. Now, Ricci gives the baton to Jenna Ortega, who has done an excellent job of enhancing the character of Wednesday's Netflix on the namesake television show, which just debuted on Netflix.
I couldn't wait to hear how Mark Sutherland, costume codesigner on "Wednesday," would discuss how he took such an iconic role and gave her classic wardrobe a modern-day spin. Of course, you can see Ortega's Wednesday from a mile away: always in black, no matter how vibrant those around her, and always with those two braided braids (save for one historic school prom moment).

In a new first-look snapshot taken from their forthcoming historical thriller The Pale Blue Eye, Christian Bale and Harry Melling disappeared behind their period costumes. The photograph, which included a snapshot of each actor in style, makes it appear that they were dressed in their costumes for the murder mystery in the early 19th century. Bale, 48, reunites with director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) to play a retired constable investigating a string of gory murders, while Melling, 33, plays a young Edgar Allan Poe, who joins the investigation in 1830.

When walking through a haunted house, two football players on a team named after an Edgar Allan Poe book, rookie safety Kyle Hamilton, and cornerback Damarion 'Pepe' Williams were all afraid. Two of Bennett's Curse Haunted House in Charm City was one of the world's most haunted houses. They were taken on a journey in the dark by cameras, with 3-D glasses adding to the fear factor. The glasses were not appreciated by the two men, with Williams' remarking, "Bro, I gotta take these glasses off...why the walls came out at me bruh?"
