Eddie Mekka (born June 14, 1952) is an Armenian American actor best known for his role as Carmine "The Big Ragoo" Ragusa on the sitcom Laverne & Shirley's "Lawoo" Ragusa.
Early life
Mekka was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, as the son of Mariam (née Apkarian), a dry cleaning presser, and Vahe Vaughn Mekjian, a factory employee. His family was of Armenian descent. His father was a World War II soldier. He graduated from Burncoat High School and attended Berklee College of Music.
Personal life
Mekka was married to actress DeLee Lively from 1983 to 1992. In 1994, he married Yvonne Marie Grace. Mia was Mia's first child together.
Mekka died in Newhall, California, on November 27, 2021, at the age of 69.
Career
Mekka performed at the Worcester County Light Opera in Massachusetts in the early 1970s, teaching young people how to sing. He went to Los Angeles after being nominated for a Tony Award on Broadway in The Lieutenant, which was also nominated for a Tony Award. In 1976, he landed the role of Carmine "The Big Ragoo" Ragusa for Laverne & Shirley, appearing on the series until it was cancelled in 1983.
Throughout his career, Mekka appeared in nearly 50 television shows and films. His television appearances included 24, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Bold and the Beautiful, and Detective Murdoch in the Fox television film Catch Me If You Can. In the bar, he appeared in Penny Marshall's 1992 film A League of Their Own as the dance partner of Mae (Madonna) in the bar.
He appeared onstage at the Luxor in Las Vegas, Nevada, and as part of Cindy Williams' national tour of Grease. Mekka returned to off-Broadway theatre on July 15, 2008, starring Steve Solomon's long-running comedy My Mother's Italian, My Father's Jewish & I'm In Therapy. The Westside Theatre Company was on display in the Westside Theatre.
Mekka reunited with his Laverne & Shirley co-star Cindy Williams in a Renée Taylor-Joseph Bologna comedy play It Had to Be You.
Mekka wrapped production in the independent film Code Enforcer in 2008. Erin Moran of Happy Days costarred him.
Mekka appeared as Tevye on the Roof at the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport, New York, from April 29 to June 20 in 2010.
