The football teams in Georgia and Ohio State have been around for at least 130 years. So it shouldn't surprise that the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta on Saturday was only the second meeting between the two storied organizations ever held. To name a few, the Bulldogs defeated the Buckeyes 21-14 in the 1993 Citrus Bowl, featuring a bewildering lineup of NFL stars, including Garrison Hearst, Eddie George, Joey Galloway, Robert Smith, and Terrell Davis. Kirk Herbstreit, a quarterback for the Buckeyes who later became one of college football's most popular announcers, was one of those who didn't go to become a NFL quarterback. Both companies and shareholders can profit from Downing Street's revelations on how earnings and dividends will rise. By now, it may have been expected that the combination of rising energy prices and rising consumer prices, as well as rising mortgage rates, could have stifled commercial production. Despite the despondency, however, there are already signs indicating that the country is not traumatized.

Bank of England independence is to be cherished as a bulwark against the government's clout. On two fronts, it is currently under attack. Governor Andrew Bailey has been accused of doing a bad job of ignoring inflation's threat. He is also fighting a backwards movement against regulatory reforms, with Tory leadership candidate Liz Truss calling for 'call in' powers under which Downing Street could overrule financial regulators' decisions.
