Donnie Shell (born August 26, 1952) is a retired American Footballer who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League between 1974 and 1987.
Shell was a supporter of the Steel Curtain defense in the 1970s. Shell retired as the NFL's top interceptions leader with 51 interceptions.
He played for eleven years for the Steelers and was named to the College Football Hall of Fame, and the NFL Silver Anniversary Super Bowl Team.
Early life
Shell grew up in Whitmire, South Carolina. He played on the Whitmire High School football team, where his team did not allow a single touchdown by opponents in his senior season. Shell played college football for Willie Jeffries at South Carolina State University, where he worked with future New York Giants and Hall of Fame linebacker Harry Carson and received All-American and all conference distinctions. In 1998, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Shell was signed undrafted by the Steelers, where he spent his entire career, winning four Super Bowls with the Steelers of the 1970s.

NFL career
Shell was a five-time Pro Bowler from 1978 to 1982, a 4-time All-Pro selection, and the Steelers team MVP in 1980. In Super Bowl XIII and Super Bowl XIV, he saved several potential six points. He had been in the top 15 in voting for the Pro Football Hall of Fame before, but no success had been achieved, but he had been in the top ten candidates in 2002. Shell was accepted into the Professional Footballers Association's Very Good Class of 2013.
Despite not being in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he was selected as a finalist for the NFL's 100th Anniversary Team in 2019.
Shell lives in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and was the Carolina Panthers' Director of Player Development from 1994 to 2009.
He appeared in 201 games for the Steelers, but only behind other Steelers, such as Ben Roethlisberger (249), Hall of Famer Mike Webster (220), and Hines Ward (who played in 217 games).
Shell was inducted into the Centennial Class of 2020 on January 15, 2020. Tony Dungy, another Hall of Famer and Steelers legend, inducted him.
