Donald Judd Life

Donald Judd (June 3, 1928 – February 12, 1994) was an American artist associated with minimalism (a term he later uninhibitedly condemned).

Judd's work sought autonomy and clarity for the created object and the space made by it, ultimately achieving a rigorously democratic presentation without hierarchy.

It was an outpouring of apparently effervescent works that defied the term "minimalism."

Nonetheless, he is widely regarded as the world's top international exponent of "minimalism" and its most influential theoretician through "Specific Objects" (1964).

In Arts Yearbook 8, Judd discusses his unorthodox interpretation of minimalism; "the latest three-dimensional work does not refer to movement, school, or design."

The common characteristics are both too general and too little common to identify a movement.

The differences are greater than the similarity." Judd's book "Understand the Differences" sheds light on the profound effects of three-dimensional specificity and generality.

Early life and education

Judd was born in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. He served in the Army from 1946 to 1947 as an engineer, and in 1948, he enrolled in the College of William and Mary. He later enrolled in Columbia University School of General Studies, where he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy and worked toward a master's degree in art history under Rudolf Wittkower and Meyer Schapiro while attending classes at the Art Students League of New York. He wrote art criticism for major American art journals from 1959 to 1965. He bought a five-story cast-iron building at 101 Spring Street in 1968 for less than $70,000. Judd converted the building (designed by Nicholas Whyte and built in 1870) as his New York home and studio for the next 25 years, occasionally displaying works by commission or purchase by other artists.

Personal life

Julie Finch married Judd in 1964, and the two children, son Flavin Starbuck Judd (born 1968), and daughter Rainer Yingling Judd were born 1970. In 1978, the couple divorced. Judd worked with artist, designer, and educator Lauretta Vinciarelli from the 1970s to the mid 1980s. He met curator and museum director Marianne Stockebrand in 1989, who now is the head emerita of the Chinati Foundation.

Judd lived in Manhattan, Marfa, Texas, and Kussnacht, Switzerland, and Kussnacht is Rigi, Switzerland. On February 12, 1994, he died in Manhattan of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
