Oxford University unveils list of candidates in line for next Chancellor role - with one hoping to be the first black woman to hold the role

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 16, 2024
Down through the years, the phrase 'male, pale and stale' might have been a fair enough description. But Oxford University's longlist of candidates for its next Chancellor is quite a different story - with 11 women making the cut. The university yesterday unveiled its diverse range of bidders for the role, which includes one who hopes to be the first black female in the role.

Imran Khan is 'blocked' from Oxford University chancellorship race after applying from prison

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 16, 2024
Imprisoned former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan has been 'blocked' from running to be Oxford's next chancellor after the University dropped him off a list of 38 candidates. Mr Khan is currently in jail on charges of corruption - though supporters say these are trumped up and lawyers argue all convictions have either been overturned or suspended. The politician's team has written to the university, branding the decision 'extremely disappointing'. A number of high-profile figures such as Lord Mandelson and Lord Hague of Richmond complete the final list of candidates for the Oxford chancellor role. The University of Oxford said all applications were considered by the Chancellor's election committee solely against four exclusion criteria.

Robert Jenrick wriggles over Tory leader campaign video claiming UK special forces are killing terrorists instead of capturing them to avoid European human rights laws

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 1, 2024
Robert Jenrick wriggled today over a Tory leadership campaign video (left) claiming that UK special forces are 'killing rather than capturing terrorists' to avoid European human rights laws. Touring broadcast studios, the former immigration minister repeatedly dodged saying whether he knew the statement to be true. Rivals for the Conservative top job have heaped pressure on Mr Jenrick - seen by many as the favourite to win - to back up the allegation about the European Court of Human Rights. Shadow home secretary James Cleverly (right), a former soldier, said UK forces did not 'murder people'. Meanwhile, Tom Tugendhat (inset) has called for defence spending to be 3 per cent of GDP by 2030.

EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Andrew Lloyd Webber's Coronation anthem 'reduced King Charles to goosebumps and tears'

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 29, 2024
EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Andrew Lloyd Webber's Coronation anthem Make a Joyful Noise reportedly reduced King Charles to 'goosebumps and tears'. He also wrote the music for the 40th anniversary of the Queen's reign in 1992. So why wasn't Andrew, purportedly HM's favourite composer, appointed Master of the King's Music instead of Errollyn Wallen?  My sources whisper that the Phantom of the Opera creator wasn't even on the shortlist made by the informal committee the King assembled. Errollyn ticked more boxes. And with the Commonwealth Summit in Samoa just weeks away, appointing a Belize-born black woman hits the right note. One of her first commissions will be a piece for the King's funeral, which HM will hope won't be heard for a long while. How does Dominic Grieve's old Tory colleague Damian Green feel about him throwing his hat into the ring to become the next Chancellor of Oxford University? Back in 1977, former attorney general Grieve was understood to have been part of a student mob which violently seized Green and threw him into the River Cherwell. Having almost been impaled on a bridge's railings, young Damian broke his wrist. Normally gentlemanly Dominic later apologised to Damian, his involvement deemed to have been 'totally out of character'.

QUENTIN LETTES: Sir Ed Whitley, who was waiting for a slot at PMQs, gave the Commons a swerve today, perhaps under a blanket with his fingers in his ears

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 10, 2024
The Lib Dem leader, who, as you will recall, is one of the top moralizers in western Europe, has been given a seat at PMQs. He gets one every two months and usually goesbbles them down like a terrier with a gravy bone. This time, he gave the Commons a swerve. Sir Ed's involvement in the Post Office Horizon computer scandal was therefore unanswered by the great ethicist. Lee Anderson, a Conservative rottweiler, had a question about him.

As victims tell their harrowing tales, the ex-postmistress confesses she was fired, arrested, and sent to jail just days after her daughter's 10th birthday, when she was incorrectly found guilty of stealing £74,000 from the Post Office

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 10, 2024
According to the BBC, the worst part of her case was having to abandon her children, because she'missed out' on a date with them that she can't recover. Ms Powell was fired and arrested before being found guilty at a trial in Exeter in 2008, where she was sentenced to 18 months in jail. In a tiny room, Ms Powell said, you're trapped behind these four walls.' To find out what's going on outside with the kids, you'll get phone calls.' I've been missing out on doing things with them, but I can't remember back then.'

In the aftermath of the Post Office scandal, an emotional ex-postmaster admits he tried to commit suicide three times and his marriage fell apart after being wrongly accused of stealing thousands of pounds

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 10, 2024
Mr Kalia's life was cut off from him over the last 21 years as a result of the controversy, which culminated in a break in his family's relationship and resulted in his exile from his family and led to his exile from his neighborhood, according to Good Morning Britain today. "Its killed me mentally, I've just cooped it up inside myself," he said on ITV; a buildup of not knowing what it was, no one to talk to, and no one to discuss it with. I have lived 21 years of my life, but I have no income to speak of.' I have had a breakdown with my family, my wife, and my children, which has left me feeling a sense of shame in the community. I've attempted suicide on three occasions, and it's as well.'

Emergency measures to fast-track the exoneration of more than 700 Post Office staff could be announced TODAY as MPs move to clear the names of those affected by the 'appalling injustice' of the scandal

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 10, 2024
During discussions with Justice Secretary Alex Chalk yesterday on steps to expedite the process of exonerating more than 700 people affected by the Post Office fiasco, Downing Street said senior judges had not raised any "significant questions." According to Whitehall sources, the plans are being finalized and are likely to be out this week, or as soon as today. Mr Chalk told MPs that 'active consideration' was being considered by legislation to reveal the names of those affected by the 'appalling injustice.'

Boris Johnson's revenge is the result of a retaliation lawsuit by Heseltine

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 15, 2023
Lord Heseltine, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, was one of the senior figures chastising Mr Johnson, who argued that the decision of the Privileges Committee should start're our relations' with the EU. Dominic Grieve, the former Attorney General, and Anna Soubry, a pro-EU minister under David Cameron, also got involved in the controversy. The cross-party committee has found that Mr Johnson 'deliberately deceived' Parliament about lockdown violations in Downing Street, which has culminated in 14 months of inquiry.

Boris Johnson will certainly be back, writes JASON GROVES

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 15, 2023
Dominic Grieve, a former attorney general who had been kicked out of office for refusing Brexit, appeared on television within minutes of the Commons' report's release, writes JASON GROVES. Michael Heseltine, a Remainer and former prime minister, was next up, saying that it was time to revisit Brexit after Mr Johnson had told 'a pack of lies.'
