Diane Wakoski Life

Diane Wakoski (born August 3, 1937) is an American poet.

Wakoski is best known for the deep image poets, as well as the confessional and Beat poets of the 1960s.

She attracted burgeoning praise in the 1980s for a tense comparison of New Formalism and Reaganism.

Life and work

Wakoski was born in Whittier, California. She studied at the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960. She spent time at this university in Thom Gunn's poetry workshops. She was there that she first encountered many of the modernist poets whose writing style would influence her writing style. Her early writings were included in the deep image movement, which also included Jerome Rothenberg, Robert Kelly, and Clayton Eshleman, among others. William Carlos Williams, Allen Ginsberg, and Charles Bukowski are all examples, according to her. Her poetry career began in New York City, where she joined La Monte Young in 1960. She was a resident of New York City until 1973. In the Williams style, her later work is more personal and conversational. Wakoski is married to photographer Robert Turney and is University Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.

In their Michigan Writers Collection, Wakoski's literary works have been praised and showcased at Michigan State University.

Her poems have appeared in more than 20 collections and several slim volumes of poetry. Emerald Ice, one of her selected poems, received the William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America in 1989. She is best known for a series of poems titled "The Motorcycle Betrayal Poems" collectively. Black Sparrow Press has published several of her books in fine editions.
