Derek Richard Grant (also known as Derek R. Grant) is an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter best known as the third and current drummer for punk rock band Alkaline Trio, who formed the band in 2001.

He is also a member of the Chicago "supergroup" Dead Ending.

He was once a member of The Suicide Machines, Telegraph, Gyga, The Exceptions and Broken Spoke.

Grant is a versatile guitarist and singer, and he has performed as guitarist and singer for both Face to Face (1998) and The Gaslight Anthem (October 2008). Josh Freese's drums on several Vandals Tours since 1998, as well as with Good Charlotte in the latter half of 2004. Derek's eight-song album entitled D.Grant Meets the Reaper, which is a project with his 12-year-old alter ego, was released free on his MySpace page in September 2008.

The songs were written between the ages of 11 to 14 years old and featured Derek at age 12 on vocals, with recently recorded music. Derek released The Purple Trilogy, a three-song EP free on his Myspace site in February 2009.

This material, which was compiled by Derek (with support from Saves the Day guitarist Arun Bali), is referred to as "Electro-Funk" and includes a cover of an unreleased Prince track ("Electric Intercourse") as well as two original compositions. Derek released "Love is a Bad Dream," a track from his forthcoming debut solo album in October.

It was backed by the non-album song "Don't Marry Me." Derek's band, Break Down, was released in January 2015 by Red Scare Industries.

It features eight songs that were written and recorded in 2008/2009.

Derek plays all instruments on the album. Through Pee Records, Derek released a 7-inch with Australian singer-songwriter Dan Cribb.

Two songs were included on the physical album, with another one-song each being released digitally.

It was mixed by Frontman Nick Diener of The Swellers, who also played bass and guitar, as well as singing on Dan's songs. Derek reunited with Detroit post-hardcore band Thoughts of Ionesco in 2017 to record an EP, Skar Cymbals.

In Detroit, MI, the band appeared in their first concert in over seventeen years.
