College career
Carr enrolled as an early-entry freshman at Fresno State in the spring semester, where his brother David also played quarterback in 2009, so he could play with the Bulldogs in spring football. Carr, a true freshman, was "in the mix" for the starting quarterback position as late as mid-July, according to head coach Pat Hill. Hill, on the other hand, announced junior Ryan Colburn would start over Carr over the 2009 season in September. Carr played in five games as a freshman in limited action.

Professional career
Carr was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft with the 36th overall pick. He was the fourth quarterback to be drafted this year. Carr played a few touchdowns in the first quarter before being suspended on August 28, impressing the coaches and fans in the Raiders' fourth and final preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.
