Early life and football career
Derek Francis Johnson was born in Bootle on January 27th, 1950, to Frederick Johnson and Elizabeth Courtney. He grew up in Scarisbrick, North West England. Acorah said his first encounter with spiritualism occurred when he was six years old when he discovered his deceased grandfather in his grandmother's house. His grandmother, a psychic, would later influence his decision to become a medium.
Acorah spent his youth at Warwick Bolam Secondary School and then went on to play for Bootle Boys and then Wrexham's academy team when he was 13. Bill Shankly, a young boy, signed schoolboy terms with Liverpool at the time. Acorah has told Emlyn Hughes that he told him not to be cautious with his new car. "Where did you get all this stuff from?" Shankly had been up late for training the next day after writing the car off, and she told him, "Son, where did you get all this from?" Hughes said of Acorah's mediumship. You can't leave it at home; you just bring your boots and play football." In the years immediately following the Scotsman's death, Acorah said he had met Shankly in the spirit world. Acorah never made an appearance for the first squad and briefly retired for the reserves before being released by his hometown club. He returned to Wrexham, where he starred for about a year, and had stints with Glentoran and Stockport County. After the birth of his son, the player's union in Manchester contacted him if he wanted to play in Australia. He and his wife discussed the matter, but they made the change, where he appeared for the South Australian State League for the USC Lions. His time at the club was cut short due to sickness, putting an end to his football career. On top of all this, his wife was suffering from homesickness and they returned to England, but they fell soon after. He began working as a medium, adopting the surname Acorah, which he claimed descended from a Dutch ancestor.
