Early life

Richards was born in Downers Grove, Illinois, to Joni (née Braden), a coffee shop owner, and Irv Richards, a telephone engineer whose father's surname was Reichert. In November 2007, her mother died of cancer. She is of German and French descent. Michelle, Richards' younger sister, has a younger brother. She grew up in both Downers Grove and Mokena, Illinois. She was the "only girl on the baseball team" as a child.

Richards' family moved to Oceanside, California, when she was 15 years old. She graduated from El Camino High School in 1989. In her high school yearbook, she was voted best looking. Richards was raised Catholic. She began modeling and traveled to Paris, New York, and Tokyo after her high school graduation and began working as a model.

Personal life

Richards became engaged to actor Charlie Sheen on December 26, 2001, and married him on June 15, 2002, at the estate of Spin City creator Gary David Goldberg. Sam J. Sheen (born March 9, 2004) and Lola Rose Sheen (born June 1, 2005). Richards filed for divorce from Sheen in March 2005, while pregnant with their second daughter. Sheen had requested a restraining order against her, accusing her of murder. Richards filed formal papers requesting a divorce from Sheen under the state of California's rules on April 19, 2006. Sheen was ordered to stay 300 feet away from his ex-wife and their children except during controlled visits. Sheen surrendered legal custody of Sam and Lola to Richards in May 2010. Their daughters had joint legal custody when they were born. Richards wanted sole legal protection, according to a person who talked to Sheen about Sheen's "marital turmoil, sobriety issues, and criminal trouble" although he did not launch a fight about it. Richards started modeling as a child and appeared in Bonne Bell cosmetics magazine ads in 1991. She appeared on the front of Teen magazine, instructional video "Modeling: What It Takes" and then went on to appear in Max Factor's Premiere 2K advertising campaign.

Richards appeared in many films and television shows since 1990, including Loaded Weapon 1 (1993), Tammy and the T-Rex (1994), Lookin' Italian (1994), and guest appearance in episodes of Saved by the Bell, Married... with Children.
