Middle distance star Gourley hungry for his own experience of a home Commonwealth Games after missing Glasgow Indoors Championships

FOR one of Scotland's truly elite athletics talents, the prospect of Glasgow hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games arouses conflicting and contrasting emotions. Excitement and anticipation, yes. But also a niggling sense of hurt. Neil Gourley dearly hopes, of course, that he can ease the pain caused by missing out on his one shot - or so he believed - of competing for something worth having in front of a hometown crowd. Born and raised in the Dear Green Place, the 1500metres specialist was left absolutely devastated when injury ruled him out of this year's World Indoor Championships at the Emirates Arena. The very real possibility of the Commonwealth Games Federation turning towards the 2014 host city as a solution to its current crisis, then, seems almost too wonderful for Gourley to contemplate. But he'll try.

David Rudisha, a two-time Olympic champion, has survived a plane crash in Kenya after a light aircraft suffered engine failure just minutes after taking off before crash landing upside down. One of five passengers on board a light aircraft, which took off from Kimana, was the 800 meters world record holder. The pilot had to attempt an emergency landing after the 33-year-old said the light aircraft's engine had stalled around eight minutes into the flight.
