Early life and education
Nykl was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, to a nurse mother and a structural engineer father. He and his family left Czechoslovakia for Canada after the Soviet invasion in 1968. Nykl briefly attended the University of British Columbia, where he studied liberal arts and marketing but did not graduate.
Personal life
He has three children: daughters Judi and Maddie, and son Sam.
Career
Nykl has appeared in scores of theatre, film, and television productions in Vancouver and Prague. He has also produced theatre and film scripts, and with Richard Toth and Ewan McLaren, he co-founded Prague's Misery Loves Company Theatre in 1994.
Nykl is best known for science fiction readers as the recurring Stargate Atlantis character of Dr. Radek Zelenka, a Czech scientist on Earth's journey to Atlantis' "lost city." His character is often seen cooperating with Dr. Rodney McKay's chief scientist, with their differences recurring throughout the series. He appeared in the Stargate SG-1 episode "The Pegasus Project" as well as "The Pegasus Project."
Nykl is fluent in Czech, English, French, and Spanish. Nykl normally speaks with a Canadian accent despite the fact that his character on Stargate Atlantis has a Czech accent. When Zelenka spoke Czech in Stargate Atlantis, Nykl translated them into English.
