EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Acclaimed as Britain's greatest living artist, David Hockney was left devastated by the death of his young studio assistant, Dominic Elliott, a decade ago. So much so that Hockney declared he would sell his five-bedroom home in Bridlington, on the Yorkshire coast, where Dominic took a cocktail of illegal drugs and alcohol with Hockney's ex-partner before drinking lavatory cleaner, leading to his death aged 23. After selling the house in 2015, Hockney lived mainly in Los Angeles and then in France.

We know her as a business reporter, TV presenter and powerhouse podcaster. But STEPH McGOVERN is also a smart investor, and is keen to pass on her market wisdom to the next generation, as Harry Wallop discovers

ALEXANDRA SHULMAN'S NOTEBOOK: I am writing from the Greek island of Syros on my last week of a long holiday. After a recent operation for colon cancer, my stomach looks like a game of noughts and crosses, marked with a large number of deep purple scars left by my excellent surgeon. So I had thought that this year, though no one loves a bikini more than me, I would have to give way to a one-piece and avoid inflicting my lattice tummy on the rest of the world. But within days of being by the pool in the sun, on went the bikini. I can't say that even my greatest fans could regard my belly as a pretty sight - not only are there the scars but two months of 'taking it easy', while giving up smoking, have not done my tummy any favours. Yet, to be honest, if how I looked was ever the guiding consideration in my choice of swimwear, I would probably be shrouded in a Nigella-style burkini.

EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Does anyone rejoice in high summer quite like Jeremy Clarkson? Kristen Wiig, a 50-year-old comedian, bounces about like a teenager on her way to the social ladder, climbing over walls and windows as the relentlessly upbeat Maxine flies. And Carol Burnett, who is 93, does a good job at 90, and she's playing a billionaire in a coma. Well, everything about Palm Royale seems to be excellent, in fact. It's loosely based on Juliet McDaniel's book Mr & Mrs American Pie, which was set in Palm Beach's super-rich Florida enclave in 1969, drenched in color like a David Hockney painting.

Celia Birwell, artist David Hackney's 70s muse, has a lot in common with her fashionista granddaughters Tilly and Lola, according to Claudia Joseph. TOM UTLEY: As I approached 70 this week, I've been worrying a lot about death this week, the threescore years and ten named in Psalm 90 as the length of time we can expect to live on this planet. According to a recent study by the Christian think tank, I'm now one of four of us who believe we worry about our own death at least once a week. I should point out at least once that many people lived much longer than 90 years since Psalm 90 was published, well over 3,000 years before the dramatic increase in life expectancy since my own birth in 1953. The Psalmist himself admitted to so much in the second part of his famous verse 10 that he wrote, although he struck a bleak note on death's inevitability, if it would appear. The days of our years are threescore years and ten years, and though they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and despair; for these years, they are soon cut off and we fly away.'

There had been high hopes at the FCO that Kate would not only visit more overseas but also bring the children. George has been to Australia and New Zealand, and Charlotte has been accompanied in Canada, Poland, and Germany, but it appears that education and routine are now more important than providing the FCO with some 'panda diplomacy.'

Mica Paris has admitted she disliked being a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, describing her experience on the program as "horrible." The soul singer, 54, said she found it too intense and couldn't get to grips with the amount of physical fitness needed for the celebrities. Mica, who was speaking at the Lightroom, London, at a special screening of David Hockney A Bigger Story, said she felt it would be a good way to shed weight.
