As reported by Fabrizio Romano, there were late issues with the deal when the clubs started exchanging documents. 

David Datro Fofana has become the 41st player to leave Chelsea in a chaotic summer at Stamford Bridge, following the completion of a loan move to AEK Athens. A hectic transfer window in west London has seen a host of players enter and exit the club as new manager Enzo Maresca shuffles the deck under the surveillance of owner Todd Boehly. In came Pedro Neto for £50million from Wolves and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for £30m from Leicester, while Joao Felix made a grand return, arriving from Atletico Madrid for £44m. Some big names have been left out of Chelsea's US pre-season tour, with uncertainty over the futures of six players in particular.  The club have named a 28-man squad that will fly out to the United States, with their first game against Wrexham in California on Wednesday.  Enzo Maresca's side will then go on to face Celtic, Club America, Premier League rivals Manchester City, before concluding the tour with a game against Real Madrid in Charlotte, North Carolina on August 7.

Burnley have confirmed the release of two players following the expiration of their contracts this summer. The Clarets will be playing their football in the Championship after being relegated from the Premier League, finishing 19th.

Fofana is scheduled to fly back to the United Kingdom on Friday, making a medical on Saturday more likely.

Chelsea has recalled David Datro Fofana from his loan at Union Berlin earlier this year. The 21-year-old striker appeared 17 times for the Bundesliga team, including four matches in the club's debut Champions League season, scoring twice in total. He joined Stamford Bridge from Norwegian outfit Molde in January 2023 and made three Premier League appearances under new manager Graham Potter before deciding to switch to Germany for a 12-month term.
