When Marliss Myers, 83, died, it was her local Albertsons cashier who gave her solace. Sharon Hechler said she is determined to keep the elderly safe even as almost half of checkout lanes in the United States are now automated. Hechler wrote in the Los Angeles Times, "We all need the human touch, personal touch." According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of cashiers is forecast to decrease by ten percent by 2031, representing 335,000 workers. However, although 85 percent of Gen Zers favor self-checkouts, only 46% of baby boomers agreed in a poll conducted by gambling company PlayUSA. According to the same survey, two-thirds of Americans said technology has made it impossible to meaningfully connect, and nearly 70% claim it has contributed to a decrease in empathy. The silent generation, those over the age of 77, was not surveyed, but the effects of direct human contact on their lives is perhaps even more significant.
