Early life
Von Bargen was born to Juanita J. (née Bustle) and Donald L. von Bargen, who was of German and English descent, was among the survivors. He was born in Cincinnati, where he spent the majority of his childhood before moving to Southern California with his family. Von Bargen graduated from Reading High School in 1968. He graduated from Purdue University in Indiana.
Personal life
Von Bargen married actress Margo Skinner but the two were divorced by the time she died on April 11, 2005. Skinner died in her sleep of a heart attack in her New York City apartment.
Career
On PBS's Great Performances anthology collection, von Bargen made his television debut in Feasting with Panthers, a play about Oscar Wilde's imprisonment in Reading Gaol.

In the ninth season of Seinfeld, von Bargen appeared as Mr. Kruger, George Costanza's boss, and in the FOX drama Malcolm in the Middle played by Edwin Spangler.
Von Bargen's stage career included a long stint with Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, Rhode Island; he made his Off-Broadway debut in 1981 in Missing People. At the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he appeared in Larry Gelbart's debut and other performances. When the play went to New York City, he made his Broadway debut. He received the Theatre World Award for Outstanding New Performer for his role in Mastergate in 1990. Maury in London Betty and As George Burgess in Things That Hang From Trees were two of his last films roles.
Von Bargen narrated the unabridged Streets of Laredo, 1993.
