Lewis Joseph "Dan" D'Antoni II (born July 9, 1947) is an American basketball player and current head coach for the Marshall Thundering Herd men's basketball team.
He served as an assistant coach under his younger brother, Mike D'Antoni of the NBA, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Lakers.
Personal life
D'Antoni graduated from Marshall in 1970 with a Bachelor's Degree in Speech and Physical Education as well as a Master's Degree in Principles of Guidance from Marshall.
Lewis, his father, a high school basketball coach in West Virginia and Ohio, was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in West Virginia in May 2004.
D'Antoni is the father of three boys, many of whom played in basketball; Andrew attended Army and later served 3112 years in Iraq; and Nick was the current Executive Officer of the East Carolina University ROTC program; and Josh attended William & Mary, where he was captain of the basketball team. Playing career
D'Antoni, a native of Mullens, West Virginia, played basketball at Marshall University from 1966 to 1977. He was the Thundering Herd's starting point guard from 1968 to 1970. In 1968–69, he led the Herd to a 17.5 scoring average. In 1990, he was inducted into the Marshall University Athletics Hall of Fame.
Coaching career
After graduating from Marshall University, D'Antoni joined the Herd's coaching staff as the head coach of the freshman basketball team, helping his brother Mike, before becoming an assistant coach of the varsity team. He began coaching basketball at Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in 1975 after failing to make the Baltimore Bullets. D'Antoni served with Socastee from 2005 to 2005 and won over 500 games. During his tenure, he also founded the Beach Ball Classic, one of the country's most coveted high school basketball tournaments. He was inducted into the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2016.
He joined the Phoenix Suns as an assistant under younger brother Mike in the summer of 2005. D'Antoni was hired as an assistant with the Knicks shortly after Mike accepted a head coaching job with the New York Knicks. After Mike resigned as Knicks head coach on March 15, 2012, D'Antoni and fellow assistant coach Phil Webber resigned. He joined the Los Angeles Lakers as an assistant coach on November 15, 2012, also under his brother. D'Antoni served as the head coach of the Knicks' and Lakers' NBA Summer League teams in addition to being an assistant coach.
D'Antoni was named as the new head coach of Marshall University's men's basketball team, 43 years after he had been an assistant with the Herd. He led the Thundering Herd to the Conference USA tournament championship game in 2017, where they were defeated by Middle Tennessee, who earned a spot in the NCAA tournament. Marshall returned to the Conference USA championship game on March 10, 2018, this time defeating Western Kentucky and receiving an automatic bid in the NCAA tournament. This was Marshall's first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 1987.
In Marshall's inaugural game of the 2018 NCAA Tournament, the 13th-seeded Herd defeated 4th-seeded Wichita State 81–76. It was the team's first-ever victory in the tournament. Marshall lost 94–71 to West Virginia University, his highest ranking in the season, finishing the season with a 25–11 record. Marshall was a participant in the CIT Championship in 2019.
