Cynthia Robinson Life

Cynthia Robinson (January 12, 1944-2015) was an American singer best known for her appearances as the trumpeter and singer in Sly and the Family Stone.

In the hit "Dance to the Music," she was featured both vocally and physically. Robinson was one of the first female trumpeter in a major American band and the first female inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

She was the first member of the original Family Stones to continue working with Sly Stone after the band disbanded in 1975.

Larry Graham, a retired member of the funk band Graham Central Station, appeared on Family Stone with Larry Graham, beginning in 1974.

Early life

Robinson grew up in Sacramento, California. She lived in Oak Park, a Sacramento neighborhood. She played flute in elementary school, but there were no flutes at her high school, and she was told to play the clarinet. She begged a fellow student, who had heard playing the trumpet in a training room, if she should give his instrument a try.

"Everything I blew was off key, but I knew it would be fine if you worked on it, and that's what I wanted to do," she told Rookie, the online magazine in 2013.

She played trumpet in the school band at Sacramento High School. Robinson was mocked by the boys in her band class for being a black girl playing a "white boy's instrument." Robinson had already told teachers that she should try a new sport and save the trumpet for the boys, but Robinson was in love with the trumpet.

Her first trumpet belonged to a beatnik who told her she might have it if she participated in one of his groups. "It smelled bad, it had all kinds of green crud inside the tubing, so I took it home, spit it out, and it was mine," she told Rookie.

She was a founding member of Sly and the Family Stone, which began in 1966.
