After two semi-finals defeats and that agonising loss to Coco Gauff in last year's final, Aryna Sabalenka finally got her paws on the US Open trophy. It was the New York crowd, as much as Gauff, that did for Sabalenka last year but here against another American in Jessica Pegula, she handled the occasion far better and won 7-5, 7-5. This is her third Grand Slam title - after two Australian Opens - and at the age of 26, Sabalenka is maturing into a truly complete player.

Damningly, Gauff hit more double faults (19) than winners (14). It is the second Grand Slam in a row, after Wimbledon, in which Gauff has lost to Navarro. This was a scrappy contest and a difficult watch at times. Gauff started the match by forcing a deuce from 0-40 on Svitolina's serve - and while she'd go on to lose the game, that series was indicative of the graft she'd go on to show as she kept her US Open defense alive. Svitolina, the world No. 28, was in a Wimbledon quarterfinal just last month and Gauff did well to ride out some moments of turbulence and get stronger as the match went on.
