Early life
Conrad Bain was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, and the son of Jean Agnes (née Young) and Stafford Harrison Bain, a wholesaler. He attended the Banff School of Fine Arts before serving in the Canadian Army during World War II. He later attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, graduating in 1948; one of his classmates, comedian Don Rickles, was a poet. In 1946, Bain became a naturalized citizen of the United States.
Personal life
Bain had two sons and a daughter with Monica Sloan (1923–2009), who stayed married until her death in 2009. Bonar Bain's identical twin brother, Arthur Harmon, appeared in Conrad's Maude character, Bonar Bain (1923–2005).
Career
Bain had more success as a stage actor in Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh's 1956 revival. "Especially well behaved," the New York Times reporter wrote about his role. Candide, Advise and Consent, An Enemy of the People, Uncle Vanya, and On Borrowed Time are among Bain's Broadway credits. He appeared in Steambath's first run off Broadway. While doing stage work in New York City, Bain also found work on television, starring in the cult supernatural soap opera "Dark Shadows" as the town's innkeeper, Mr. Wells, during seasons 1 and 2. Werewolf Chris Jennings (Don Briscoe) sparked his reputation (Don Briscoe).
Bain was one of the primary promoters of the Actors Federal Credit Union in the 1960s. "The struggle grew out of the fact that, at least in the world of financial services, actors, and other celebrities were not valued or, more importantly, no access to credit," he said in an article in the Credit Union Times.

Bain appeared in films like Lovers and Other Strangers and Woody Allen's Bananas in the early 1970s before receiving national recognition for his television work. He is best known for his role as Dr. Arthur Harmon, Bea Arthur's title character's conservative nemesis, who married Vivian in Maude (1972–78). As Park Avenue millionaire Phillip Drummond, who adopted two African-American orphanage boys from Harlem, Willis, and Arnold, and housekeeper Mrs. Garrett, lived with him and his daughter, Kimberly. In 1979, Phillip Drummond appeared on The Facts of Life. On the series finale of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Bain reprised his role of Phillip Drummond with Gary Coleman as Arnold Jackson.
