Chelsea's sporting directors defend club's £1.15BILLION spend under Todd Boehly - and reveal key reason why they hand out long-term deals to new stars in controversial policy
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 15, 2024
The Blues have spent around £1.15billion on transfers but have only finished as high as sixth since the Todd Boehly-led consortium took over the club in May 2022. One of their policies under sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart has been their dishing out of long-term deals to often unproven stars, a strategy seen as risky. In August it emerged their players had a combined 191 years remaining on their contracts - almost double that of any other team.
Former Premier League striker reveals why he wouldn't send his son - who is on the books at Coventry - to a Premier League 'big six' academy

A member of the Premier League 100 Club does not think a top team is the best environment for a youngster to thrive. The forward went on to play for a host of Premier League clubs, netting 106 goals in total in the top flight. The Englishman's young son Milan, 10, is now on the books at Coventry and that's exactly the kind of club he wants him be starting out his career with. He said: 'When you're in the academy and you're a youth player, the objective at any club is to get to the first team, but the pathway has got to be clear, there's got to be an opportunity to get there.'

Ange Postecoglou spent his summer holidaying in the sweltering Greek islands where temperatures can reach 86 degrees. Back in north London, as autumn approaches and the air starts to cool, Postecoglou continues to feel the heat. Four points from their opening four Premier League matches has made for an indifferent start for a Tottenham side that last season looked like they may challenge for the title.

The rising trend of small shin pads - why are stars such as Jack Grealish risking serious injury for fashion, superstition and comfortability?
www.dailymail.co.uk,
September 7, 2024
KATHRYN BATTE: It is a trend many believe was started by Jack Grealish - pulling football socks down to just above the ankle and wearing tiny shin pads that barely cover the lower leg. 'It's just his style,' his former Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood said in 2015. 'If he performs how I think he can, he can dress how he wants.' The Manchester City star has rolled his socks down and worn children's shin pads since his breakthrough and it has become a trademark others have replicated. Some, such as Grealish, wear small shin pads but instead keep their socks high. Conor Gallagher is one example. He caught the eye with his miniscule shin pads, which were smaller than his hand, on his debut for Atletico Madrid . In fact, some modern-day shin pads are as small as the size of a bank card.

Chelsea chief leaves the club after just 15 months following hectic transfer window in which Blues spent more than £200m - as fans welcome exit of unpopular figure they called 'tone deaf'
www.dailymail.co.uk,

Chelsea chief executive Chris Jurasek has left the club after just 15 months following a chaotic transfer window which saw the Stamford Bridge side shell out £200million on 11 players. The American venture capitalist has handled the business side of things under owner Todd Boehly since May 2023. Jurasek moved directly from Clearlake Capital, which is the private equity group that part-owns Chelsea alongside Boehly, and returns to the firm following his exit. The experienced businessman had a strained relationship with supporters after removing travel subsidies in a move which saved the club a mere £250,000.

The Blues were once again active in the transfer market, completing deals for a number of players including the likes of Joao Felix , Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Filip Jorgensen. They continue to spend money under the Clearlake ownership, with several other stars, including Conor Gallagher and Raheem Sterling, departing on either loan or permanent deals. Time will tell if each arrival proves to be a success or not, but one man who joined for big money has been praised by former Premier League striker Crouch.
Here's the REAL reason why Premier League clubs are selling off their homegrown talent, writes SIMON JORDAN
www.dailymail.co.uk,
August 28, 2024
SIMON JORDAN: In recent times there has been a confected outrage directed at the transfer policies being exhibited at certain clubs. I've found it faintly ridiculous listening to people mortally offended whenever a club sells one of its homegrown players. A theme of this transfer window has been Scott McTominay (left), Conor Gallagher (centre, left), Emile Smith Rowe (right) and other graduates heading for the exit. To those complaining, I get the whiff of double-standards. If owners built a side predominantly made up of academy players because that was their want, they'd be considered as not having a lot of ambition. If they sell their academy players instead, it's a club that has no soul and destroying the future of these bright young things. Sending them somewhere else to play rather than the place they supposedly love because they'd been there so long. I've heard it all now!
One Premier League team has started ZERO English players this season - so here's the one rule that must be brought in... or England will NEVER win another World Cup, writes JEFF POWELL
www.dailymail.co.uk,
August 28, 2024
JEFF POWELL: 'Thanks mate,' followed by 'No problem, pal' are no longer part of the regular lexicon of the Premier League. Not with Englishmen now in the minority in all but two of the starting line-ups in what advertises itself as the best league in the world. Not with Manchester City kicking off with only one home boy so far this season. As did Liverpool and Tottenham when their quota slipped to a singleton by the second weekend. Not when one club has started none at all in both their opening games of the 2024-25 Premier League campaign. Unbelievably, that dubious distinction has been foisted on grand old Wolverhampton Wanderers.
