Early life
Columba Garnica Gallo was born in Arperos, Guanajuato, Mexico, and José Mara Garnica Rodr (1925–2013), a migrant labourer and waiter who was married in February 1949, León, León, Guanajuato, and Josefina Gallo Gallo (born 1920), who lived in León, Guanajuato, Mexico. Columba's father immigrated to the United States in 1956 when she was 3 years old and her parents divorced in 1963. Columba and her mother remained in León after her father's departure.
Garnica attended Instituto Antonia Mayllen, a private Catholic academy in León's historic heart.
When she was 16 years old and he was 17, she met Jeb Bush in León in 1970. As part of a class at Andover called Man and Society, Bush was teaching English as a second language and assisting in the construction of a school in the tiny nearby village of Ibarrilla.
Garnica and Bush married in Austin, Texas, on the grounds of the University of Texas's Catholic student center. She did not speak English at the time of her marriage, and a portion of the wedding reception was held in Spanish.
