After severing an ear in a bizarre crash, a former champion rally driver was spared a fine because he was rushing to the hospital. Graham Middleton, 67, was unloading his shopping last winter when he fell on ice and struck the side of his head on his vehicle's bootlid, causing the agonising injury. Following a long wait in A&E, the former UK champion bled himself to Hereford County Hospital, where he was warned of gangrene if the wound wasn't patched up within six hours.
