In a Currie Cup game against the neighbouring Griquas team, Coenie scored a hat trick of tries for the Free State Cheetahs. It's after Coenie's outstanding season with the Cheetahs in the 2010 Currie Cup domestic rugby season that they were selected as part of the Springbok squad for the November 2010 tour of Europe.
On June 9, 2012, Oosthuizen made his first test appearance against England in Durban, which was against England.

On May 13, 2019, it was announced that he had signed a three-year contract with Sale Sharks and would join them after the 2019 Super Rugby season.
In 2016, Oosthuizen was selected in a South Africa'A' squad that played a two-match series against a touring England Saxons squad. In their first match in Bloemfontein, he was brought on as a replacement, but the visitors lost by 32-24 victories.
