With Voyager 1 losing contact after floating billions of miles and sending back stunning images, PAUL BRACCHI on the tin can that smashed through the final frontier (and will sail on for eternity)

Unbelievable as it may seem today, the computers on the Voyager 1 spacecraft, considered state-of-the-art back in 1977 - the year Elvis left the building for the last time - have 240,000 times less memory than an iPhone. The radio antenna, protruding from the central circular dish like the antenna on a robotic insect, is equally archaic, emitting as many watts as a refrigerator lightbulb. As for the onboard tape recorder, which is constantly on, it differs little from the one in a typical 1970s car, like, say, a Ford Cortina. The reason the machine is permanently whirring, by the way, is because the small amount of heat it generates is enough to keep the nearby fuel propellant line from freezing. Today, after nearly 50 years exploring the cosmic unknown and clocking up, incredibly and against all expectations, 15 billion miles, this little tin can - the size of a small car - is still going and communicating with ground control on Earth.
'I'd say no' if Taylor Swift asked me out, but Sir Tim Rice, 79, chuckles, "because every time she falls out with someone the poor bloke gets killed in her next song, she'd say no":

The 79-year-old, whose celebrated works include Evita, Chess, and The Lion King, said that modern pop music has 'depressed' him. The Oscar-winning lyricist gave a wide range of interviews about the musicians, films, and books that he adores - as well as those that he isn't a huge fan of. Sir Tim, who has written for musical theatre since the 1960s and is one of the few people to have received an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award, is best known for his friendships with Elton John and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. In his early teens, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly used to cheer him up in The Times. However, he wrote: "One of the things that disappointed me today about a lot of pop music is that so many of these songs seem to be quite mediocre in a'me me me' way.' I was enjoying Traitor by Olivia Rodrigo - she's a natural performer and there are some excellent musicians on the radio, but 'They sound really sad.'
Diane von Furstenberg, 77, puts on a smile for the cameras as she enjoys a night out at the theater with billionaire partner Barry Diller - just days after her former sister-in-law Ira died at the age of 83

On Tuesday night, the 77-year-old Belgian-born fashion designer, who created and popularized the wrap dress, was photographed walking out of Joyce Theater in New York City with Barry, who we'll all remember as 2000. Her public appearance comes just days after her older sister-in-law, model and socialite Ira von Furstenberg, who was identified as one of the first 'It girls,' died.' According to Italian media outlets, Ira died in Rome on Sunday at the age of 83. Prince Eduard Egon von und zu Furstenberg, also known as Egon, was Diane's first husband, and the pair married from 1969 to 1983. Despite their divorce, the couple remained close until his death in 2004 at the age of 57.
Van Morrison's Accentuate writes ADRIAN THRILLS The positive review of his (grumpy) man finds his happy place

QUEBIAN THRILLS: Whatever you like about his steadfast anti-lockdown views, Van Morrison's two double albums in quarantine were difficult to bear. Dominated by rants about social distancing, the media and music business, 2021's sprawling Latest Record Project: Volume 1 and last year's What's It Gonna Take? The Belfast Cowboy lived up to his name as the world's most popular man. However, even a performer who outspokenly stated that he hated Covid and showed his more mature face in March, a tribute to the jazz and skiffle that took over Britain in the 1950s. Morrison, who denounced the word "pseudo-science" that surrounded Covid, had to wake up occasionally, and he showed his more empathetic side. Accentuate The Positive is a jolly double LP that includes some notable collaborations and sees him return to two more of his childhood favorites: 1950s rock and roll and 1960s pop. It takes Van, 78, back to his early days as a soulful rhythm and blues singer, and it's (whisper it) positively cheering.
Sleigh bells at Halloween?Only Cher has the sparkle to pull that off!

There's an unwritten rule on this website not to mention Christmas information until December. As with most policies, there will always be an exception, and if Cher decides to debut a Christmas album in October, it would be Scrooge-like not to deck the halls with boughs of holly and attend the soirée.

The Beatles' first ever known recordings of them before their meteoric ascension to fame have been published by the BBC. The popular foursome appeared at a boarding school Stowe, Buckinghamshire, in 1963, just two weeks after releasing their debut album Please Please Me. The recording was made by student John Bloomfield, who was just 15, at the time, after his colleague David Moores booked the company for £100.
CRAIG BROWN: Play it again Sam?Not on your nelly! Why encores hit the wrong note

CRAIG BROWN: More!More!Encore!Encore!'How many hours - days, weeks - of my life have I spent encouraging famous musicians to return to the stage? In my youth, I used to attend a new rock concert every week or two. Although the band loitered backstage, I would spend ten minutes of each concert stomping and yelling for more. They would then saunter back on, plug their instruments in, play a couple of songs, and - more!more! The entire process of the rigmarole will relaunch. Finally, the house lights will go on, and the audience will shuffle away at a moment of insurgent sigh of relief.
Jerry Lee Lewis, the popular Balls of Fire performer, died at the age of 87. He was previously married to his 13-year-old COUSIN

Jerry Lee Lewis, a rock singer, died at his Memphis home at the age of 87. On Friday, the Great Balls of Fire singer passed away. Lewis was the last survivor of a generation of rock stars, including Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard. Since 'the King' was drafted to serve in the Korean War,' he was touted as a potential successor to Elvis. Lewis' reputation and image were badly damaged after it emerged that he was in a bigamous marriage to a 13-year-old cousin, who some claim was only 12 years old when they married.
