The James Webb Space Telescope has published its first photographs of Mars, providing a unique and more detailed glimpse of the Red Planet's atmosphere. The giant telescope, which is located almost a million miles away from Earth, is giving scientists and the public a glimpse of Mars' visible disk, i.e. the planet's sunlit side facing it. The first pictures of Mars were taken by the Webb's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam). They depict a region of the planet's eastern hemisphere in two separate wavelengths or shades of infrared light.
