There's more to the modern Europa League than tiny crowds and knife-wielding ultras, writes MATT BARLOW... just ask Brighton

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 21, 2024
MATT BARLOW: Not too long ago the Europa League felt like a booby prize. There was the Thursday-Sunday schedule and travel to unfamiliar, distant locations, combined with a lack of interest, weakened teams and distinctly sub-capacity crowds. There was not a lot of money to be made in the early rounds and sometimes clubs even lost money when it was the plain old UEFA Cup. But on Thursday night inside the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, the competition seemed like the most exciting thing in the world. Chairman Tony Bloom rekindled the drama of Joao Pedro's late goal to secure Brighton top spot in Group B last season, while others recalled the pinch-yourself draw that promised games with Ajax, Marseille and AEK Athens.

With reporters caught FIGHTING, yelling abuse at players, and near-naked dancing, African football chiefs promised to clamp down on "unprofessional" behaviour from journalists in the press box at AFCON

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 3, 2024
Following public discussions on the Ivory Coast's local police, the governing body has now taken the radical decision of releasing new policies and banning media access to the tournament, which starts last month and will run until February 11. The on-field drama of the prestigious tournament has been tempered a bit by officials who have been accused of aiming abuse at players, dancing near-naked, and battling with each other. When announcing the new laws in Abidjan, a CAF media official told journalists, "some one dancing naked in the media tribune." We can't have that.' CAF has also released a larger statement and shed light on the efforts taken to clamp down on a number of journalists' "unbecoming conduct" at stadiums.

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 25, 2024

There aren't many other sports where you can get 40-yard free-kick screamers, Hand Of God attempts, and players with injuries trying to do a back-flip in preparation all mixed into one. AFCON has already provided us with so many talking points; we're only just passed the group stages and we've had unbelievable giant-killings and no fewer than six managerial casualties - and one of which with their side still in the running!

This year's collection features everything from Chris Hughton to a former Arsenal flop taking his first babysteps in the dugout. Mail Sport looks at the names you might recognise - as well as one requiring rather niche Premier League knowledge

Gwent Police's mother, a 12-year-old boy who missed his finger, slams Gwent Police

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 13, 2023
Raheem Bailey (right) was 11 when he was allegedly attacked by a group of girls at his Welsh school in May last year. The teen, who is now 12 years old, spat his finger over a fence in an attempt to prevent his suspected tormentors from approaching him. Despite a six-hour hospitalization, doctors were unable to save the finger and amputate it. Shantai Bailey, Raheem's mother, claims her son suffered with "racial and physical violence" after beginning at 1,600-pupil Abertillery Learning Community in Gwent, South Wales, where she is pictured below. However, after a nine-month probe, Gwent Police announced that they would take no further action after finding that Raheem left the school'on his own initiative' and insisting that no one else was involved. "I am overwhelmingly dissatisfied by the police's decision not to take no further action in Raheem's case," Ms Bailey said.

Chelsea and Liverpool are faltering, so could Brighton, Brentford or Fulham make Europe?

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 10, 2023
JOE BERNSTEIN: With fewer than half a season remaining on Brighton, Brentford, and Fulham, you'd have a long shot on them. It shows what can be achieved with top-class planning, recruitment, and management. Although the big guns are struggling to integrate, their smaller counterparts are reaping the benefits of patient club-building. At one time, they were all in the third class. Often, success is based on the owner's vision, purchasing and selling the right players at the right time, as well as finding a talented manager that fits in with the club's culture. Get those three things correct, and European football can be a rewarding endeavor even if you're playing in a stadium that is dominated by Anfield or Stamford Bridge.

World Cup: Ghana have the players to spring a surprise in Qatar

Ghana didn't do well in September, after being outclassed by Brazil and only won by 1-0 over Guatemala, ranked 81 places below them, in a recent friendly, where Addo's charges against them have been drawn with Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea.

Chris Hughton, who assists Ghana in preparing for Qatar, is eager to return to leadership as he assists the country in its preparations

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 22, 2022
INTERVIEW BY ROBERT DINEEN: Chris Hughton pauses mid-answer and then withdraws himself from the discussion. Hughton is disinterested by the smell of tiny feet outside his living room, and he wants to check in on the youngest of his ten grandchildren. He's cradling in his arms two-year-old Amara, the baby having just arrived with his mother Aisha for a morning visit. Hughton, a 63-year-old veteran of three decades coaching in the top two leagues and 14 years as a respected head coach, is easy to forget with his fit and youthful presence. He will play for Ghana's national team shortly as a technical advisor, assisting head coach Otto Addo in the process of restoring some vigour to a Black Stars team that upset the odds to defeat Nigeria in a qualifying play-off.

Under Graham Potter's new-look backroom workers, Chelsea's new-look backroom staff are on view

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 18, 2022
Managers in Premier League are like box-buyers. Few head coaches walk through the doors of a new top flight club on their own, without the assistance of their trusted backroom staff behind them. As Chelsea owner Todd Boehly wooed Graham Potter (left) away from Brighton for a lucrative five-year contract, the pair may not have guessed which staff members the 47-year-old wanted to bring with him to Stamford Bridge. His Cinderella story from the fourth level of Swedish football to the Champions League's dizzying heights deserves high praise, although Potter would be the first to admit that his backroom workers (right) was instrumental in his meteoric rise.

Graham Potter, Chelsea's top manager, did wonders at Brighton as a result of style and policy change

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 7, 2022
Following his success with Brighton over the past few seasons, Graham Potter has been named one of the most highly rated young managers in the Premier League. His success on the south-coast has led to his appearances in a number of top jobs in England, but after being allowed to talk to Chelsea about the vacant managerial position, he may be ready to try his luck at one of the country's top clubs. Chris Hughton left the club in 2019, and although there isn't any immediate improvement in results, there are still plenty of reasons for fans to be hopeful with Potter in charge of the club.

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 17, 2022

Ryan Yates of Nottingham Forest talks about the Premier League's burgeoning in the city

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 12, 2022
BY IAN LADYMAN (external): Anterior view of the club's training ground: A wall on which two large photographs hangs. One of them is of Brian Clough and Peter Taylor. Martin O'Neill, Frank Clark, Kenny Burns, John McGovern, and Peter Shilton appeared on other shows. Both are included in the European Cup. So when Yates, the club's vice captain and a student, asks if Steve Cooper's new Forest team is inspired or daunted by this great history, the answer is straight. 'These two European Cups are being discussed a lot here, and that's only right,' says Yates. We see the guys from the 1980s knocking about the house.' It's amazing what they did and we have to accept it. A lot last season, we talked about this.' However, we also talked about the importance of establishing our own history.'
