Chloe Dao (born June 15, 1972) is an American fashion designer and television presenter who lives and works in Houston, Texas. With a line of women's evening wear, she was the winner of the second season of Project Runway.
Several of the pieces in her final collection featured billowing, voluminous sleeves, detachable shrugs, and bold brocade prints.
Education and early career
Dao studied marketing at the University of Houston, before fading out after a year and a half. She then enrolled in Houston Community College's design program and at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), graduating in 1994 with an associate's degree in pattern making.
Dao began working at FIT, Madame Rossuel, a costume couture store on New York City's Upper East Side, while awaiting graduation. She worked at Finity, a knit and sportswear firm, as a design assistant and pattern maker after graduation. She left Finity after one year as a design assistant and production manager, where she stayed for six years. She then began to work for Catherine Dietlein as an assistant before returning to Houston to open Lot 8. The store's name is a nodder to her eight Dao sisters in her family. Her clothes have been published in Lucky magazine, as well as in a variety of Texas newspapers, such as the Houston Chronicle and Texas Monthly.
Dao expressed reservations about her potential to win the game at Project Runway's taping. In the end, the judges selected her collection over those of the other finalists: Santino Rice and Daniel Vosovic.
She won the second episode of "Clothes Off Your Back" and the tenth episode, "Makeover" on Project Runway. In the fifth episode, "Social Scene," the sixth episode of "Window Shopping," she was also in the top three; the seventh episode, "On Thin Ice"; and the ninth episode, "Flower Power." In the eleventh episode, "What's Your Line," she was also in the bottom two.
Unlike Jay McCarroll, Dao's season one winner, the Banana Republic's mentorship program was awarded.
And with the success of PR2, Dao continues to expand and extend her boutique in Houston.
In July 2006, she appeared in a famous Vietnamese music show called Paris By Night. She was also in Paris by night 84.
Dao's designs were on display in the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center's "Exit Saigon, Enter Little Saigon" exhibit in January 2007.
