It is still surreal how suddenly you left us, how swiftly our lives changed forever. You would have turned 80 today. We had always planned a big 80th birthday party. I imagine you, sparkling in a pink or purple george wrapper, fussing about which guests had not been served food, dancing and then telling us your back hurt, laughing your full light-filled laugh. Wonderful event with YPO Lagos. The absolute highlight was when that brilliant and talented woman ifeomafafunwa gave me the most precious gift: a memory. I will never forget it. PS: Such a good feeling to wear clothes that make you feel like yourself. My old and lavishly-loved trousers (worn too often 😎) by one of the most original and interesting designers I know ladunnilamboofficial. And my top by the equally original gozelgreen. I imagined it as a visual conversation between two boundary-pushing Nigerian designers. (Odelora Abba once looked at a photo of my outfit and said, with the loving resignation of a father who will never understand his daughter’s fashion choices, “nke dika mmonwu.” I wonder what he would have made of this.)
