Chase Twichell Life

Chase Twichell (born August 20, 1950) is an American poet, lecturer, and, in 1999, the founder of Ausable Press. Things As It Is, her most recent poetry collection (Copper Canyon Press, 2018). Where the Answers Should Have Been (Copper Canyon Press, 2010) received her Claremont Graduate University's prestigious $100,000 Tufts Poetry Award. * She has received numerous awards in writing from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and The Artists Foundation. In addition, she has been given fellowships from both the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Performing Arts. * Her poems have appeared in literary journals and magazines, including The New Yorker, Field, Ploughshares, The Atlanta Review, Poetry, The Nation, and The Yale Review. Many of Twichell's poems are influenced heavily by her time as a Zen Buddhist student at Zen Mountain Monastery's poetry, as well as her book The Snow Watcher. She attended the Foote School in New Haven. "Zazen and poetry are both mind research studies," she says in a Chase magazine interview. * In surprising and unpredictable ways, I find the internal pressure created by emotion and a koan to be similar. * Zen is a magnificent sieve through which to pour a poem. "It's laborious" is a word that comes to mind. Twichell was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and she received her B.A. A graduate of Trinity College and her M.F.A. The Iowa Writers' Workshop is an online publication. Russell Banks, a New York City writer, lives with her husband, author Russell Banks. * She has taught at Princeton University, Warren Wilson College, Goddard College, University of Alabama, and Hampshire College.
