Chase Minnifield Career

College career

In 2007, Minnifield was redshirted. He had 53 tackles and four interceptions as a back-up in 2008 and 2009. He had 48 tackles, six interceptions, and 0.5 sacks during his first year as a starter in 2010. Chase was ranked No. 1 in the United States. No. 2 in the ACC and No. In the 2010 season, the seven interceptions were the best in the country, with six interceptions, and he was named as the "Jim Thorpe Defensive Back of the Week" Honor on two separate occasions his junior year. Chase served as Virginia's top kick/punt return specialist from 2008 to 2010. He was used less often in 2011 as a more "sure-handed" punt returner, but was not used more often because of the danger of injury that arises from returning punts and Chase's contribution to the team.

Minnifield had 50 tackles, three interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and 1.5 sacks in twelve games of the 2011 season. Chase's outstanding defense and senior leadership aided the Cavaliers to an 8-5 record and Virginia's first bowl game since 2007.

Professional career

Minnifield was drafted as third or fourth round pick prior to the 2012 NFL Draft. Despite being undrafted, he was still considered one of the top undrafted rookies and was accepted by five different NFL teams after the draft. Minnifield signed with the Washington Redskins on April 29, 2012 as an undrafted free agent, with encouragement from his father. He was put on the physically fit to perform list right away from starting training camp on July 18, 2012, and is still recovering from microfracture surgery. Minnifield was waived-injured by the team on July 24, 2012, after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament. He officially joined the team's injured reserve list due to his inability to be claimed off waivers.

Minnifield was suspended by the Redskins on August 31, 2013, the last roster cuts before the 2013 season, but the Redskins expressed disappointment in bringing back their practice squad. He was assigned to the team's practice squad the next day. He was officially signed to the team's active roster on November 29.

On August 30, 2014, the Redskins cut him for the final roster cuts before the 2014 season. For the second time the following day, he was called to the team's practice squad for the second time. Since the Redskins placed DeAngelo Hall on injured reserve, he was promoted to the active roster on September 22. Leonard Hankerson was cut from the Redskins' roster on November 4 after playing six games. Two days later, the Redskins recalled him to their practice squad. After cornerback Tracy Porter was placed on injured reserve, he was recalled to the active roster on November 26. The Redskins recalled him on December 6, citing persistent symptoms from his concussion against the Indianapolis Colts on Week 13. Minnifield was released by the Redskins on December 16, following an injury waiver.
