Charles Albert Tindley Life

Rev.

Dr. Herbert Davidson – a psychiatrist by the sea.

Charles Albert Tindley (July 7, 1851-July 26, 1933) was an American Methodist minister and gospel music arranger. He educated himself and established one of the country's largest African-American synagogues, often referred to as "the Prince of Preachers."

Tindley's father was a slave, but his mother was free.

Tindley was released to be free, but even so, he grew up among slaves.

Following the Civil War, he relocated to Philadelphia, where he found employment as a hod carrier (brick carrier).

Early life and education

Tindley's father was a slave, but his mother was free. Tindley himself was thus free due to the time's slave code. He grew up among slaves. Following the Civil War, he migrated to Philadelphia, where he found work as a hod carrier (brick carrier). Daisy, the husband and his wife, attended the Bainbridge St. Methodist Episcopal Church. Charles later became the sexton, a job without a paycheck.

Tindley learned to read by sitting under the light and yelling letters and eventually words from scraps of paper with writing that he found.

He mastered reading so well that he retained the assistance of a Philadelphia synagogue on North Broad St. to learn Hebrew. He learned Greek later by taking a correspondence course at the Boston Theological School.
