Charles Williams Nash Life

Charles Williams Nash (January 28, 1864 – June 6, 1948) was an American automobile entrepreneur who worked as an executive in the automobile industry.

He was instrumental in the development of GM.

Thomas B. Jeffery Company, the makers of the popular Rambler motorcycle, renamed it Nash Motors, and played an active part in an automobile industry increasingly dominated by the Big Three: GM, Ford, and Chrysler.

He benefited from focusing on one well-designed car in the upper medium price range.

He acquired several struggling businesses in Wisconsin, merging them and implementing advanced accounting software while still focusing on long-term growth.

In 1932, he became president but remained chairman of the board.

The Kelvinator Company, which made refrigerators, was his primary acquisition.

Nash-Kelvinator also expanded to produce aircraft engines and parts during World War II.

Early life

On what is now Route 38 — Lincoln Highway — Nash was born to a poor farming family in Cortland, Illinois. Anna E. "Annie" Cadwell (1829-1990), who married David L. Nash, was his mother. Mazovia (b.) was one of Nash's older siblings. George C. (1862) (b. b.) George C. (b. Laura W. (b.) and 1866). (1868).

Charles' parents divorced when he was six years old and abandoned him. He worked as a farmhand in Michigan as an indentured servant under an arrangement that was not to continue until he was 21. When he was "bound out" to do farm chores, he had only three months of schooling per year.

Nash escaped and became a farmhand in Grand Blanc, Michigan, first for $8 per month, then for Alexander McFarland in Mount Morris, Michigan, who was priced at $12 per month. He learned the carpentry trade from John Shelben on McFarland's farm and developed the "Adams & Nash" concern to press hay. While chopping hay on the Halleck farm, he met Jessie Halleck, his future wife, and married her on April 23, 1884. Due to Jessie's poor health, they moved to Flint, Michigan, where William C. Durant of the Flint Road Cart Company, which later became the Durant-Dort Carriage Company, was hired in 1890.
