Charles T. Fisher Life

Charles Thomas Fisher, 1880 to 1963, was both an American businessman and an automobile pioneer. Charles, the second son of Lawrence and Margaret Fisher, was born in Norwalk, Ohio.

The family will eventually have seven boys and four girls.

Fred, the eldest son of the twentieth century, was the first to move to Detroit, where Albert Fisher, an uncle, had established Standard Wagon Works during the second decade.

Charles Fisher joined his brother as an employee of the C. R. Wilson Company, a horse-drawn carriage body manufacturer who was just starting to build bodies for the automobile manufacturers. On July 23, 1908, Charles and Fred Fisher established the Fisher Body Company together with their Uncle Albert, with the fledgling automobile industry set to emerge as a major market.

They soon began recruiting their five younger male siblings into the company.

The Fishers extended their operations into Canada by opening a Walkerville, Ontario plant, and by 1914, the Fishers had grown to become the world's largest auto body manufacturer. The Fisher brothers sold 60% of their company to GM in 1919. (GM)

When the brothers sold their remaining forty percent and Charles Fisher was appointed as a GM Vice President in 1926, Fisher Body Company became a subsidiary division of GM.
