Cooper, 48, has been accused of being anti-semitic by critics who believe he was born in Gyllenhaal, 42, as well as being accused of 'Jewface'. In the film opposite Carey Mulligan, who portrays his wife Felicia Montealegre, the Philadelphia native takes the role of the legendary musical conductor, with the film investigating their relationship. Many have been quick to ask why Gyllenhaal, whose mother is Jewish, was not cast despite showing no interest. In 2018, the two top Hollywood A-Listers clashed in a bid to the music maestros estate, with Cooper working with Paramount and announcing the film on May 10 of that year. On May 1, Gyllenhaal revealed his project first, announcing that he will be working with Bron Studios' director Cary Fukunaga, before the pair scrambled to get permission for the musical rights. Ultimately, Cooper came out on top, with Hollywood heavyweights Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese gaining the rights alongside Paraphrasedoutput.
