Carlos Seixas Life

José António Carlos de Seixas (June 11, 1704 – August 25, 1742) was a pre-eminent Portuguese composer of the 18th century.

Seixas, a virtuoso of both the organ and the harpsichord, succeeded his father as the organist for Coimbra Cathedral at the age of fourteen.

In 1720, he departed for Lisbon, Portugal's capital, where he was to act as the organist for the royal chapel, one of Portugal's highest offices for a musician. He was granted a knighthood.

Seixas' music dates back in an uncertain transitional period, from the learned style of the 17th century to the 18th century's galant style.

Life

Seixas was born in Coimbra to Francisco Vaz and Marcelina Nunes. He was surrounded by musical talent from a young age; his father was the cathedral organist; and a flurry of musical involvement in Santa Cruz's local monastery played a vital role in his musical education. Seixas succeeded his father as cathedral organist in 1718, a few days before his father's death. He went to Lisbon two years after being born in 1720 to take up his new role as court organist and harpsichordist in the court of John V of Portugal.

He praised his intelligence and tenacity on the keyboard, including Lu's Xavier Furtado de Mendonça, the Viscount of Barbacena, where he taught harpsichord lessons to the Viscount's wife and daughters in exchange for artistic patronage. Seixas' in Lisbon met Domenico Scarlatti, who was in Portugal from 1719 to 1728 as the new head of the court cathedral. José Mazza's Diccionario biographico de Musicos, a portuguese king's brother, Dom António, arranged for Scarlatti to give Seixas harpsichord lessons. "You should teach me lessons," Scarlatti said, instantly recognizing Seixas' abilities.

He was married at age twenty-eight to D. Maria Tomásia da Silva, with whom he had two sons and three daughters. He was knighted by the king in 1738 and was inducted into the Order of Christ. He died of a rheumatic fever in 1742 and was buried in Lisbon's Santa Maria Basilica.
