Both literal and musical, growth has been a key component of 5 Seconds of Summer's career. The Australian pop-rock band went from YouTubers covering famous songs in their high school years to major-label stars releasing four studio albums with increasing experimentation and broadening influences from pop-punk to new wave. 5SOS5, the singer's forthcoming fifth album, is due to be released on September 23, and it continues to evolve.
Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood, and Ashton Irwin, the band's lead singer, talk about the majority of the album's creation, "Complete Mess" in the new episode of MTV News documentary series "The Method." "The album and a majority of the tracks on it are more reflective, and [they] take a look at the bigger picture of stuff," Clifford says. "I think it was really in tune with what we wanted to create."
