Newcastle's stale team is WORSE than it was two years ago and Brighton exposed that in 1-0 win - but it's down to wasteful recruitment, not transfer restrictions, writes CRAIG HOPE

CRAIG HOPE: Four without a win in the Premier League, no goals from open play in nearly seven hours and a feeling that Eddie Howe's best XI is weaker than it was two years ago. Key players such as Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson have aged and are increasingly absent, while others like Fabian Schar and Dan Burn are sound performers but will turn 33 this season.

Chelsea face a huge test of the Enzo Maresca project on Sunday as they travel to Liverpool in what is the standout game of the weekend, while the under-fire Erik ten Hag will be desperate for a victory against Brentford. Meanwhile, the likes of Ipswich, Southampton, Wolves and Crystal Palace are all still searching for their first win of the campaign, with Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool hoping to keep to the pace at the top of the table.

CRAIG HOPE: Alexander Isak is set to return from injury for Newcastle this weekend in a huge boost for Eddie Howe - but Callum Wilson may need a little bit longer. All the talk on Tyneside this past fortnight has been of whether the pair will be available for Saturday's visit of Brighton. Wilson has been sidelined since the summer with back and hamstring issues and, while he will be given every chance to prove his fitness, Confidential can reveal that he remains a doubt.

Newcastle punished by short-sighted striker recruitment as shortage leaves them toothless against Everton - the Magpies NEED a proper back-up for Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, writes CRAIG HOPE

October 6, 2024
On the five occasions since the start of last season when Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson have not been fit to start, Newcastle have failed to win in the Premier League. At Goodison Park, they were the better team and should have won, only to be let down by their final action in the final third. They needed a striker on the pitch. They had two at home injured and one on the bench in William Osula who, at 21, is not yet trusted at this level.
Newcastle striker Callum Wilson 'eyed by two Premier League clubs' as he closes in on return from back injury
www.dailymail.co.uk,
September 24, 2024
Callum Wilson could be set for a move to London in January as two capital-based Premier League clubs are reportedly interested in taking him away from Newcastle United. Wilson has been at St James' Park since joining from Bournemouth in September 2020. The 32-year-old was very much Newcastle's main man up front initially but his role has been reduced slightly following the arrival of Alexander Isak in August 2022.
NEWCASTLE CONFIDENTIAL: Alexander Isak suffers fresh injury, 'the next Erling Haaland' being tracked to solve forward problems and an ally in the battle against PSR

CRAIG HOPE: Alexander Isak has suffered a toe injury and is a doubt for Saturday's trip to Fulham , Newcastle Confidential can exclusively reveal. The fresh issue has left the Magpies sweating on the fitness of their star striker, especially given Callum Wilson is set to remain sidelined until next month with a back injury. Isak was forced off at half-time during Sunday's 2-1 win at Wolves with an eye complaint. The Swede had taken a ball to the head in the first half and we understand there was swelling around his eye. That problem has since eased and would not have kept him out of this weekend's game at Craven Cottage.

CRAIG HOPE: After exceeding expectations to qualify for the Champions League in 2022-23, this season was a more trying one for Newcastle. They were booted out of the Champions League at the group stage, lost six Premier League games in seven over the winter period - 14 across the 38 games - and were knocked out of both cup competitions at the quarter-final stage. The Magpies struggled with an injury crisis during the season, and despite improving in the final months of the season, they missed out on Europe despite finishing seventh - after Manchester United kicked them out by winning the FA Cup.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Newcastle could be playing Four-Four-f***ing-Two! Eddie Howe is relishing chance to start strikers Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson together at Brentford… but insists his approach is much more nuanced than Mike Bassett
www.dailymail.co.uk,
May 19, 2024
CRAIG HOPE: Newcastle need a win at Brentford to be guaranteed of finishing in the European places, and they must then hope Man United lose in the FA Cup final. To achieve that, Howe (bottom inset) is pondering whether to use two strikers, with Wilson (left) set to return from illness for the trip to West London. He paired Wilson and Isak (right) together at Burnley earlier this month and both were on target in a 4-1 win. And Howe was asked if there was still a place in the modern game for the formation used by fictional England boss Mike Bassett (top inset) in the hit movie.

CRAIG HOPE: Magpies boss Eddie Howe (inset) has been able to start with both of his frontmen on just one occasion this season because of injury. That was at Burnley 10 days ago, but the pair have since been struck down by illness. Wilson's (right) contract expires in 2025 and there is an expectation he will leave this summer, with a younger forward brought in as replacement. In the short-term, he is hoping one of Isak (left) or Wilson recovers in time to face Man United at Old Trafford on Wednesday, especially given the hosts are likely to start with Casemiro and Jonny Evans at centre-back.

An engineering student who abused England striker Callum Wilson on social media because he passed the ball to a white teammate has dodged jail. Ibukun Quadri, 21, called Wilson a '****' during England's 2022 FIFA World Cup opener with Iran on 21 November 2022. Quadri was 19 when he sent the message to Wilson, who replaced England captain Harry Kane in the 76th minute at the Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar. England had scored through Jude Bellingham , Bukayo Saka , Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford, before Wilson pulled the ball back for Jack Grealish to finish. But the Warwick University student said: 'Wilson you are a **** for that.'
Burnley 1-4 Newcastle: Rampant Magpies condemn sorry Clarets to crucial defeat in their relegation battle and cement a European spot for next season
www.dailymail.co.uk,
May 4, 2024
Ruthless Newcastle pushed Burnley closer to the Premier League trapdoor with a 4-1 rout at Turf Moor that boosts their Europa League hopes. It was a crushing afternoon for Burnley as Nottingham Forest's 3-1 win at Sheffield United left them five points from safety with only two left to play - a trip to Tottenham next week before Forest visit on the final day. And it was the same old story. Vincent Kompany's men began brightly and created a string of chances in the first 15 minutes but Callum Wilson scored from Newcastle's first real attack 19 minutes in before goals from Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes put the game beyond doubt before half time.
Roy Keane has a 'DINOSAUR mentality', blasts West Ham striker Michail Antonio - after Man United legend made thinly-veiled dig at him for podcasting and 'having a laugh' after defeats
www.dailymail.co.uk,
April 25, 2024
Michail Antonio (left) has hit out at Roy Keane's (right) 'dinosaur mentality' after the Manchester United legend criticised players who host podcasts. The West Ham striker has co-hosted the BBC Sounds Footballer's Football podcast since 2021 along with Callum Wilson, and more recently, Fulham captain Tom Cairney. Keane, without mentioning any names, told the Stick to Football podcast: 'I think that [podcasts] can be a distraction for a player, particularly if you're on the back of a defeat, and you're in the next day and everyone is having a bit of a laugh.' Antonio, in his latest podcast with Cairney, has swiped back at the Manchester United legend and explained the advantages of hosting them.
Callum Wilson is a 'quality' player who 'can add a different dimension' to Newcastle's attack, insists Eddie Howe - as he warns it 'will cost the club a lot of money' to replace the striker if they sell him this summer due to FFP rules
www.dailymail.co.uk,
April 23, 2024
Eddie Howe has warned Newcastle's hierarchy it will cost a lot of money to replace Callum Wilson, should the club decide to sell him this summer. The 32-year-old is entering the final 12 months of his contract and there is an expectation he will move on before next season. Wilson's record, when fit, is unquestionable, and he has scored 46 times from 77 starts in black and white. He went to the 2022 World Cup with England on the back of a scoring streak at the start of last season.
'You shouldn't laugh if you've been beaten!': Roy Keane delivers his withering verdict on the likes of Michail Antonio and Callum Wilson having podcasts while still playing
www.dailymail.co.uk,

Roy Keane has made clear his views on active athletes doing their own podcasts - and unsurprisingly it wouldn't be his cup of tea. Premier League stars Callum Wilson of Newcastle and Michail Antonio of West Ham hosts their own podcast on the BBC. The subject was discussed on the latest episode of Stick to Football following the extraordinary success of the 'New Heights' podcast fronted by NFL stars Jason and Travis Kelce.

CRAIG HOPE: Despite the marches in Sheffield on Wednesday, the overcrowding in Newcastle's FA Cup match against Hillsborough last year has now been described as a "near miss" by the organisers. After we highlighted fears raised by followers of Leppings Lane End, where 97 Liverpool supporters died after a crush in the 1989 FA Cup semi-finals, Mail Sport has been barred from attending matches by the Championship club. Fans of Newcastle's frightening in the concourse and tunnel entrance to the seating area prior to kick-off. Erling Haaland has burst onto the scene in the last two years at Manchester City, scoring 36 goals in a campaign that saw his team win a historic Treble containing the Premier League title. The score was a record for a Premier League season, and with 12 games remaining, he has already added 17 to his total this season. However, the Norwegian doesn't even rank in the top scorers of the last five years, with no Manchester City players making the cut.

www.dailymail.co.uk,
February 16, 2024
CRAIG HOPE: Callum Wilson's pectoral surgery and absence of up to three months could cost Newcastle United millions of pounds. Why? Well, my observations in January, when Atletico Madrid's loan application was rejected, was that Wilson would likely leave this summer. With his deal coming to an end in 2025 and him turning 32 this month, I'm told there is a mutual understanding between club and player that the time has come for a change.
Callum Wilson, a Newcastle striker, has been knocked out for up to 12 weeks as he recovers from knee surgery on injured pectoral muscle
www.dailymail.co.uk,
February 15, 2024
Callum Wilson's hopes of making the England squad for Euro 2024 are all but over as he prepares for three months out due to a pectoral tendon injury. Newcastle's striker is expected to be hospitalized, according to Mail Sport, and he will be out for nine to twelve weeks. It's the latest injury blow to strike Eddie Howe's Magpies, who have had a season marred by absences. Wilson is expected to miss the next ten games this season, and if he does not appear again this season, he may have played his last game for the club this season, given his deal will have 12 months to run in the summer. Mail Sport knows that abroad, including Saudi Arabia, is a point of concern.

The chart then shows how much money the player has been playing against various rankings, ranging from 'League Two Averages (300)' to 'Ballon d'Or Contenders (1000+)'.
