AFL career
Gibbs was named in Carlton's leadership group for the 2007 AFL season without having played a single AFL match, which is the first time this has happened in history.
On his first round one against Richmond, he kicked a goal for the first time while becoming the 1100th player to play for Carlton. Brownlow medalist Jason Akermanis in round ten received his NAB Rising Star award with a 100 percent effectiveness and a great shut-down role.
Gibbs kicked five goals in every game of the 2007 season. The bulk of his growth and experience has been in the backline, where he has appeared as a halfback flanker.
In 2008, new coach Brett Ratten reduced the size of the leadership team, and Gibbs was excluded from the new team. Gibbs continued to play as both an attacking midfielder and as a tagger throughout the season, doing well in both roles. He defeated several top-class opponents, including Chad Cornes (nine disposals), Heath Shaw (six disposals), and Adam Goodes, who was holding to seven disposals despite collecting 26 of his own as a tagger. He had a strong team spirit, precise disposal by foot, offensive hitting, and excellent football knowledge and awareness in the midfield. During the season, he earned seven Brownlow votes and finished fifth in the club's best and fairest division.
Gibbs began playing more as an attacking midfielder and less as a tagger in 2009. He ended the season with 615 disposals (averaging 26.7 percent) and polled 15 votes in the Brownlow Medal to finish ninth in the country's highest and fairest, finishing third in the club's best and fairest.
Gibbs began splitting his time between the midfield and the half-back line in 2010, playing as a rebounding defender. Greg Williams' 45 disposals tied him for the most contested round by a Carlton player in a single game (since records were kept in 1984). Gibbs finished fourth in the club's best and fairest for 2010.
Gibbs won 100 games for Carlton against the Brisbane Lions in 2011.
Gibbs re-signed with Carlton for a second two years in June 2012.
Gibbs signed a new five-year contract with Carlton in June 2014, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2019 season. He went on to win his first John Nicholls Medal and was also selected in the All Australian 40-man squad.
Despite being a footballer for Carlton, Gibbs revealed at the end of the 2016 season that he wanted to return to South Australia for family reasons and requested a trade. He remained with Carlton after struggling to facilitate a trade with the Adelaide Football Club.
During the 2017 AFL trade season, Carlton and Adelaide resumed trade talks, with Gibbs moving to Adelaide.
Gibbs announced his retirement on September 10, 2020, and played his final AFL match against Adelaide against Carlton on September 13, 2020.
