All is relatively quiet behind the 18th green on Monday afternoon when Brian Harman arrives for the reign champion's press conference, the week's curtain raiser. Harman is a good guy, who has savoured every second in which he has held the Claret Jug and gives a playful insight into how the last 12 months have gone. It has been his privilege, he says, to drink some 'unusually expensive wine' and 'unusually expensive bourbon' from this iconic trophy. He then makes a serious point. Earlier that day Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of the R and A, had announced that the prize fund for this year's tournament stood at £13.1million, with the winner inline to pocket £2.38million. The Open stands at 28th place in terms of golf's best rewarded events.

Scottie Scheffler is a boosted 6/1 favourite with Sky Bet to win The 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon starting Thursday. Scheffler has experienced an incredible calendar year that includes wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship, RBC Heritage, Memorial Tournament, Travelers Championship and most notably the Masters. Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, Ludvig Aberg and Xander Schauffele round out the five best-backed players in the Outright Tournament winner market - with the four paying 15/2, 14/1, 14/1 and 14/1 respectively. Meanwhile, if you're after an outsider, reigning champion Brian Harman is a wide 60/1 to become just the 13th player to win back-to-back Open Championships.
Reigning champion Brian Harman claims he would play at The Open for free after tournament chiefs raise concerns about escalating prize pots
www.dailymail.co.uk,

DOMINIC KING AT ROYAL TROON: Brian Harman has insisted he would play at The Open for free after tournament chiefs admitted they are concerned about escalating prize funds. Harman was the spectacular winner of last year's Championship at Royal Liverpool and he was understandably emotional on Monday after handing back The Claret Jug - from which he has drunk "unusually expensive wine" over the last 12 months - to R & A Chief Executive Martin Slumber. There is a £13million kitty up for grabs this week in Scotland, £2.38m of which will go to the winner on Sunday and Harman is bidding to become the first man since Padraig Harrington (2007 and 2008) to retain his title.

ISABEL BALDWIN AT TPC RIVER HIGHLANDS: Scottie Scheffler and Tom Kim toasted their joint birthday with a pizza party ahead of the Travelers Championship earlier this week. But on Sunday, it was the World No. 1 spoiling the party for his fellow birthday boy. The final round of The Travelers Championship proved to be more of a test of will than skill. Luckily for Scheffler, he possesses both. Used to lie-ins over the weekend, the World No. 1 suffered a rude awakening at the US Open last week. But Sunday, he was back to his regular scheduling. 11:15am: Tee off in the leading group. 4:50pm: Weekly trophy lift. It's a routine he's now gone through six times this season, twice in three weeks, and four times at a PGA Tour signature event. The one new addition to the programme? A wild playoff shootout against his close friend.

He became the first player to win back-to-back in 50 years of The Players Championship by matching the biggest comeback and lowest closing round by a winner.

Scheffler rubbed, massaged, fiddled with the area on his neck, which became painful on the second hole of the second round of The Players and hasn't niggled him ever since. The tape remained sturdy through it all. The agony lingered for a long time. And so? Scheffler's grip on this term was loosened. For the majority of Saturday afternoon, his chances of becoming this championships' first back-to-back champion seemed to have come to an end. He had played through the first 15 holes, colluding two birdies, one bogey, and 12 pars.
